月舘学園運動会・Sport’s Day at Tsukidate Academy

On a clear, sunny, and blistering day, Tsukidate Academy had its Sport’s Day.
とても暑くて晴れの日に月舘学園の運動会を開催しました。

This year being my last, I was determined to go to support my students, and the school kindly allowed me.
今年は私の最後の年であるので、教え子を応援しに行きたいと腹に決めて、月舘学園の先生から参加の許可を頂きました。 

Since most schools in America don’t have anything similar, it was a new experience for me!
アメリカの学校では運動会がないので、とても新鮮な体験でした！

All of the students were split into two teams; red and white. Each grade competed in a variety of games, sometimes multiple grades collaborating in matches.
全校生は二つのチーム、赤と白に分れました。各学年ごとに様々な競技で競争し、時々複数の学年が共に競争しました。

Many of the games seemed difficult, even for an adults. Among them, the parachute relay in particular stood out. A student from each team wore a standard elementary school backpack with a parachute attached to it. Their job was to run across the field, run a circle around a pole in the middle, and reach their teammates on the other side to hand off the back pack for the next person. Whichever team managed to get through all of their team members the quickest, won! Luckily the wind decided to give the student some respite and make things a little easier.
大人でも難しそうな競技が多く、特にパラシュートリレーが大変そうでした。各チームから1人ずつ、パラシュートが付いた小学校の標準的なランドセルを背負って参加した。競技の内容は、校庭を横切り、中央にあるポールを一周して、反対側にいるチームメイトのところまで行き、次の人にランドセルを渡すことだった。チームメンバー全員を最も早く走り抜けたチームの勝利だ！幸運なことに、競技中は風が弱り、ほんの少し風の抵抗を楽にしてくれた。

 Watching all of the games was inspiring. It was a show of teamwork, sportsmanship and perseverance.
すべての試合を見て感動しました。チームワーク、スポーツマンシップ、忍耐強さを見せつけられました。

Despite the heat and difficulty of the games, the children did their best without complaint. Those not competing, stood on the sidelines cheering their teammates.
暑さや競技の難しさに関わらず、学生たちが文句を言わずに頑張りました。
待機中の学生は横でチームメイトを情熱的に応援していました。

It was heartwarming to see the middle schoolers support and guide their younger teammates especially.
特に中学生が後輩を支えながら指導する姿は心温まるものでした。

I wasn’t just an observer however, I also got to participate in one of the games! It was a scavenger hunt race.
しかし、私はただの見学者ではなく、一つの競技に参加した！それは借り物競争でした。

The children stood on the start line, and once the signal was given, ran to pick up a card with the name of something they had to find and bring with them to the finish line.
子どもたちはスタートラインに立ち、合図が出ると、何かを見つけてゴールまで持っていかなければならない。そのお題が書いてある物や人の名前が書かれたカードを取りに走りました。

I was among the list! While I dislike running, I was determined to do my best to help the student who got my card get first place.
その中に私も入っていた！走るのは苦手ですが、私の名前が書かれたカードを選んだ生徒が1位になれるように一生懸命頑張ろうと思いました。

A couple of rounds passed before my card was pulled, but I made sure I was ready when a student approached me. As the game calls for, we locked hands before we made a mad dash to the finish line.
私のカードが引かれる前に数ラウンドが過ぎたが、ようやく準備していた私の出番が来ました。競技のルール通り、私たちは手をつないでゴールまで猛ダッシュしました。

We came in second place, bested only by someone who was lucky enough to pull the card that allowed them to run directly to the finish line.
結局2位でしたが、ゴールまで直接走ることができるカードを引いた幸運な人に負けたので、しょうがなかったです！

The day ended with quick remarks and an announcement of who won. The students celebrated and congratulated each other, regardless of winning or losing, before everyone packed up and left.
その日は、簡単な挨拶と勝者の発表で終わりました。生徒たちは勝敗に関係なくお互い祝いました。

It was an amazing experience, one I’m thankful to have been a part of. I hope next year, everyone can have just as much fun!
素晴らしい経験をし、今回の運動会に参加できたことをとても感謝しています。来年も皆さんが今年ほど楽しめることを願っています！
