聖光学院男子野球部・Seiko Gakuin Boy’s Baseball Team

One of the most famous things about Date City is the renowned boy’s baseball team at Seiko Gakuin.
伊達市と言えば、聖光学院男子野球部にちがいないです！

I was honored to interview the head coach, Tomoya Saito, and A team player, Haru Aonagi.
光栄なこと、野球部の斎藤智也監督とAチームの選手の青柳羽瑠選手にインタビューをさせて頂きました。

Involved in baseball since he was young, Coach Saito was inspired by his own middle school coach. He aimed to be a coach himself, landing a job as a faculty member at Seiko Gakuin. Once he made it as coach, he was tasked with the seemingly impossible goal of getting the baseball team to play at Koshien within 2 years or face removal from the program. Coach Saito stepped up to the plate, and in 2001, the baseball team went to Koshien for the first time. He has been coach of the boy’s baseball team ever since.
斎藤監督は若い時から野球に関わり、中学校の監督に影響され、監督を目指しました。聖光学院の教諭になり、やっと監督ができたと思ったら、野球部を2年以内に甲子園に出場させなければ監督としてから外されるという、一見不可能な目標が課せられました。しかし、斉藤監督がその任に就き、2001年に野球部は初めて甲子園に出場しました。以来、男子野球部の監督を務めています。

Coach Saito has a unique philosophy when it comes to running the baseball team. Rather than focusing solely on technique, he aims for his pupils to grow as people above all else, in turn leading them to become stronger players.
斎藤監督は、野球部の運営に関して独自の哲学を持っています。技術だけにこだわるのではなく、何よりも人間として成長させ、ひいては強い選手へと導くことを目指しています。

In addition, he refuses to scout players, a common practice even in high school teams. He personally believes it results in the children being treated as a commodity of sorts, and prefers players who are passionate enough to choose Seiko Gakuin themselves.
しかも、高校チームでもよく行われるスカウトもしません。子どもたちが商品として扱われる結果になると感じ、斎藤監督は自ら聖光学院を選ぶほどの情熱を持った選手を好むようです。

Aonagi aims for his team to be the best in Japan. He cheered on his upperclassmen when they achieved Top 4 at Koshien his first year, and has been aiming for the spot himself ever since. His says the secret to Seiko’s strength lies in the regular meetings the team has, both with the coach and with each other.
青柳選手は日本一を目指しています。1年生の時に甲子園でベスト4を達成した先輩を応援し、それ以来、トップを目指しました。聖光学院の強さの秘密は、監督との定期的なミーティングと、チームメイト同士の交流にあると言いました。

Originally from Tokyo, he says coming to Date where people greet you as they pass and there is nature aplenty, was an adjustment at first, but that he prefers it now. He hopes to be a professional player in the future.
東京出身の青柳選手は、人とすれ違うたびに挨拶され、自然も豊かな伊達に来たばかりのころは、最初は慣れなかったが、今は東京より伊達の方が好きらしいです。将来はプロ選手を目指していると言っていました。

If you have the opportunity to watch a game, I highly recommend it! I found it more exciting than a pro team game. Please cheer on the boy’s baseball team as they make Date City proud.

聖光学院女子野球部・Seiko Gakuin Girl’s Baseball Team

Seiko Gakuin established a girl’s baseball team for the first time this fiscal year!
聖光学院は今年度、初めて女子野球部を創設しました！

I had the honor of interviewing the head coach, Katsuya Matsusaki, and two players: Captain Kokoro Mizuno and center Ayaka Itou.
女子野球部の松崎克哉監督とキャプテンの水野心選手、センターの伊藤絢香選手にインタビューさせていただきました。

Coach Matsusaki was a former student and member of the Seiko Gakuin Boy’s Baseball Team. He was captain of the team in 2004 when the school made its second appearance at Koshien, making a name for themselves by reaching top 16! With this resume, it’s no wonder he was specifically invited to be the first head coach of the girl’s baseball team.
松崎監督は聖光学院男子野球部のOBで2004年に同校が2度目の甲子園出場を果たした際には主将を務め、ベスト16に名を連ねました！この経歴から見ても、女子野球部の初監督に招聘されたのも当然でしょう。

Coach Matsusaki hopes that the team can polish themselves through baseball. He says compared to the boy’s team, you can feel the girl’s unadulterated purity and passion for the game. He called them the treasure of the baseball world.
松崎監督は野球を通して自分を磨くという考え方を持っています。男子チームに比べると、女子チームは純粋さと野球への情熱が良く伝わってくるとおしゃいました。彼女たちを球界の宝と呼んでいました。

As a new team, only 1st years are members, but they hope to condition their minds and bodies to be able to stand at Koshien by their last year in high school.
新チームなのでメンバーは1年生のみですが、高校3年までに甲子園に立てるように心と体をコンディショニングしたいと言っていました。

Both Mizuno and Itou have brothers who were on baseball teams. They said their goal to focus entirely on the match that is in front of them.
水野選手も伊藤選手もお兄さんが野球部だったらしいです。現在、目の前の試合に集中することが目標だと言いました。

It’s difficult to get along with such a large, diverse group, especially since they live together in the school dorms, but that everyone tries their best to get along. Mizuno said that the girls have a good sense of humor, and that helps keep the atmosphere light.
大人数と多様なグループで学校の寮で一緒に生活しながら仲良くなるのはキャプテンとしての水野選手の課題ですが、水野選手によれば、チームの皆さんはノリがいいので、良かったと言っていました。

I imagine there is a lot of pressure to succeed, especially considering the legacy the boy’s baseball team has created for the school.
男子野球部が聖光学院に築き上げた財産を考えれば、女子も成功しなければならないというプレッシャーはとても大きいと思います。

But I have no doubt that with the guidance of Coach Matsusaki and the fire lit within the hearts of the players, they will forge their own name for themselves and make their school proud!
しかし、松崎監督の指導と選手たちの心の中に灯された炎で、女子野球部は自分たちの名誉を築き上げ、学校の誇りとなることは間違いないと思います！
