November's English Experience ・ 11月の英語体験

In November’s English Experience, we used English to build bridges.
11月の英語体験では、英語を使った橋渡しをしました。

Yet before embarking upon any construction work, we warmed up by singing and dancing Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.
しかし、橋づくり工事を始める前に、頭・肩・膝・爪先の歌と踊りでウォーミングアップをしました。

After dutifully dealing with the ever-demanding Simon, the children confronted Oni-sensei and the Zookeeper.
その後に「船長さんの命令ゲーム」をし、子ども達は鬼先生と動物園長先生にも会いました。

Their next stop was at Bingo’s farm.
次に、ビンゴの農場に寄りました。

It is well known that this song features a farmer, and a dog named Bingo.
この歌では、農家さんと「ビンゴ」という犬が登場することがよく知られています。

But through these English Experiences, the children have learned that the farmer keeps another pet in his rice paddies: a paddy shark.
しかし、この英語体験を通じて子ども達は農家さんがもう一匹のペットを水田で飼っていると知ります。そのペットはタンボザメです。

The hunger of this shark is so great, that he even attempts to satiate it with the letters of Bingo’s name.
このタンボザメは非常にお腹が空いているので、ビンゴの名前の文字を食べてしまいます。

As the song continues, the children imitate the snapping of the shark’s jaws with a clap: one for each of the letters devoured.
歌が続くと、子ども達は鮫の口を真似して、食べられた文字の数と同じ回数手を叩きます。

However, after eating the letters of Bingo’s name, the shark inevitably eats Bingo as well.
しかし、ビンゴの名前を完食した後、鮫は「ビンゴ」そのものも食べてしまいます。

This prompts me to draw a new pet for the farmer,  as well as give it a name; this also provides an opportunity for the children to learn letters beyond B, I, N, G, and O.
このとき、僕は新しいペットを描き、その名前も書きました。子ども達に「B」、「I」、「N」、「G」、「O」以外の文字を教える機会になりました。

On this particular day, the children learned the letter K.
この日、子ども達は新たに「K」の文字を習いました。

The next activity probably involved all of the alphabet’s letters; though only I had to deal with them, as I read an English-language storybook to the children.
後の活動で英語の絵本を子ども達に読み聞かせたので、すべてのアルファベットが登場したと思いますが、気づいたのは僕だけかもしれません。

For their part, the children used numbers, and helped me count the number of characters on each page.
子ども達は数字を使って、絵本に出たキャラクターを数えてくれました。

Though actually, I was hoping that they would notice the use of the present progressive verb tense.
実際は、現在進行形の使い方を子ども達に気づいてほしかったのですが…

I’m not sure how much they picked up on that, but they were able to remember the phrasal verb falling down.
恐らく、現在進行形についてはあまり分かりませんでしたが、句動詞の「falling down」(落ちる)を覚えてくれました。

We used it to sing the song “London Bridge” in English.
その言葉を使って、「ロンドン橋落ちた」を歌いました。

Once the children became able to sing the song, their teacher and I got to work on building a bridge.
子ども達はその歌を歌えるようになってから、幼稚園の先生と僕は橋を作りました。

We then asked the students to traverse underneath it; but apparently they had little faith in the soundness of our construction, for they all raced through in one frantic human chain.
子ども達に下を通るようにお願いしましたが、僕たちの橋は信用できなかったみたいで、皆で手をつないで急いで通っていました。

Granted, their fears were not baseless; our bridge did have a peculiar tendency to suddenly collapse, only to be rebuilt with the help of those trapped within it.
ずばり、その不信感は正しかったのです。なぜなら、僕たちが作った橋はすぐに落ちてしまい、その下にいるお友達も一緒に橋を架ける仕組みになっているのです。

As a result, the bridge became bigger and bigger.
その結果、橋がどんどん大きくなりました。

Which in turn ensured that more and more five-year-olds found themselves trapped inside, when it unexpectedly crumbled apart. 
大きくなるほど、多くのお友達が捕まってしまいます。

 Finally, only one child remained.
最後には、一人のお友達しか残っていませんでした。

Could he traverse under the bridge before it fell upon him?
橋が落ちる前に、下を通れたのか?

Of course not.
いいえ。もちろん、無理でした。

We kindly ensured that he would be able to join his friends as a member of the bridge crew.
結局、お友達と一緒に橋の一部になりました。

Everyone having labored hard in bridge construction, to all were duly distributed wages (which consisted of a coloring page and wordsearch).
皆さんは橋つくりを頑張りましたので、その日の給料として塗絵とプリントをもらいました。
