October's English Experience ・ 10月の英語体験

Of all the English Experiences given through the year, the October edition stands out.
年間を通して、10月の英語体験は特別でした。

Indeed, it has gained such notoriety that on this day we were joined by a team of photographers.
なんとカメラマンがいらっしゃいました。

Nonetheless, we began the English Experience like any other, with an exhilarating execution of Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.
この英語体験の始めはいつものように、頭・肩・膝・爪先の歌と踊りを元気よく実行しました。

We then moved on to Simon Says; yet, unmoved by the kindness of the meek and mild-mannered Simon, the children clamored to face Oni-sensei.
次に「船長さんの命令ゲーム」をしましたが、船長さんは優しすぎたらしいです。子ども達は鬼先生を呼び勝負を挑みました。

Little did they know of what they were asking.
しかし、鬼先生の恐ろしい祟りにあうとは子ども達は夢にも思いませんでした。

Soon nearly every child was facing an eternity of sitting in the playroom.
あっという間に、子ども達は床に座らされてしまったのです。

The fate of the class fell to the few children who managed to remain standing.
年長組の運命は立っていたお友達が決める事となりました。

Were they strong enough to stand up to Oni-sensei?
鬼先生の恐怖に耐えることができたのか？

They were, and resoluTely told him to let their friends stand up.
その子はとても強かったです。敢然と友達を立たせなさいと鬼先生に命じました。

Bound by his oni honor, he reluctantly agreed.
決まりを絶対守る鬼先生は不本意ながら承諾しました。

Not only did the children stand up, but they flew free like a bird, as we played Zookeeper Says.
子ども達は立ち上がったあと、「動物園長さんの命令ゲーム」で鳥のように飛びました。

Yet before long everyone had returned to earth and sat down at a farm, to sing the song BINGO.
やがて子ども達は舞台を農場に移し、「ビンゴ」を歌い始めました。

During which – and as expected – the shark ate everything.
「ビンゴ」ではいつもどおり、鮫がすべてを食べてしまいました。

Though expected, it was still a shock to the farmer.
予想できていたのに、農家さんには傷つきました。

In an attempt to help calm his nerves, I drew him a new pet.
なので彼を慰めるために、新しいペットを描いてあげました。

As best fit the month’s lesson plan, the farmer was gifted a bear.
この日の内容に合わせ、そのペットは熊でした。

Yet even this did not relieve his sorrow.
しかし、熊をもらっても、農家さんはまだまだ泣きました。

The farmer’s tears being a hindrance to the lesson, I resorted to wiping them away with a knit handkerchief.
僕は農家さんの涙をハンカチで拭いてあげました。

Sadly, in my enthusiasm, not only the tears but the bear’s name, and yes, the bear himself met their end.
しかし、涙だけではなく、熊のなまえも、そして描かれた熊さん本人も拭いて消してしまいました。

We realized that the only way to cheer the farmer up was to provide him with his favorite childhood amusement – kamishibai, picture board theatre.
やっぱり、元気になってもらうには、農家さんが子どもの時に大好きだった遊びを提供するしかできませんでした。それは紙芝居でございました。

Though I lacked a bicycle or sweets to sell to the children, I did my best to entertain them with this original reTelling of the local ghost story, The Candy-Shop Ghost.
昔のように自転車で歩いたり、お菓子を配ることはありませんが、地元の昔話である「飴買い幽霊」を楽しく演じる事を頑張りました。

Though many of the activities within the English Experiences are repeated during the year, it is only in October that the children are treated to the performance of a hand-drawn kamishibai.
英語体験の多くの活動は年中に何回も繰り返しますが、手描きの紙芝居が楽しめる英語体験は10月だけです。

As the story drew to a close, the children were eager to shake out their goosebumps with a game.
紙芝居の終わりが近づくと、子ども達が遊びたがっていました。

Fittingly, the month’s game was a rendition of the classic Duck-Duck-Goose; though instead of geese, specters appeared with their haunting call in this game of Ghost-Ghost-Boo.
今回の英語体験のゲームは「ハンカチ落とし」のような遊びで、鳴く幽霊が出る「幽霊・幽霊・うらめしや!」というゲームでした。

On second consideration, it does seems strange that the ghosts were chased by children in this game, instead of the other way around.
思い返してみると、幽霊が子どもを追いかけるのではなく、子どもが幽霊を追いかける事が少しおかしかったかもしれません。

Thankfully, the children paid no attention to this inconsistency, and instead bravely engaged in heated pursuit around their seated friends.
そんなことは気にせず、子ども達は座っているお友達の周りを元気に走り回りました。

Eventually, the activity ended with all of the children chasing me into a corner.
最後には、僕は子ども達に追い詰められてしましました。

Having found myself in similar situations countless times before, I knew exactly what I had to do.
追い込まれた経験が多い僕は、しなければならない事をよくわかっていました。

I handed over the presents.
プレゼントを渡すことです。

The Kannon of  Ryūhō Temple ・ 龍宝寺​観音

The same rainy afternoon on which I visited the Shirane community’s Kannon of Chōkoku Temple, I was invited by the attendant Buddhist cleric to visit the Kannon hall at his home temple of Ryūhōji.
長谷寺観音を訪問した同じ雨の日に、別当寺の龍宝寺のお坊さんにそのお寺の観音堂への招待を頂きました。

This temple is collocated with Yanagawa’s celebrated Hachiman Shrine (the restoration of which was extensively covered in the CIR Updates of February 2020).
このお寺は有名な梁川八幡神社の隣に位置しています。(その神社の復元は2020年2月の国際交流員日記に記載されています。)

Although the Kannon hall resides at the same site, it is separated from the rest of the complex by a dangerous moat.
観音堂は龍宝寺の一画にあっても、危険な池で隔てられています。

Thankfully, a bridge is provided. 
幸い、橋が設備されています。

Careful not to inadvertently play in the moat, I crossed over onto the Kannon hall’s isle of infinite mercy.
池で遊ばないように気を付けながら、観音堂の慈悲の小島へ橋を渡りました。

By then, I was happy to take refuge from the rain under the structure’s substantial pavilion roof. 
その際に、観音堂の宝形造の下に雨宿りできた事をありがたく思いました。

But what awaited inside the hall?
さて、観音堂の中に何が待っているでしょうか。

Bountiful treasure – of the cultural variety.
それはとても文化的なもので…

Or, if not treasure, than at least Important Cultural Properties, as designated by Date City.
伊達市指定重要文化財です。

That is the honor given to the thirty-three statues of Kannon that line the back of the hall.
それは観音堂の奥に並んでいる33体の仏像です。

Not everyone was standing along the back wall – other venerable figures could be found throughout the building.
奥に並んでいた33体の仏像がすべてではありません。他の像も堂の中にありました。

Despite having been primarily alone while I photographed the interior, a review of the pictures conjures the sense that I had been in a crowded room.
お堂の中を撮影していた時はだいたい一人でしたが、写真を見返すと満員の部屋だった気がします。

Though the deities in the Kannon hall may boast immortality, I am still a mere mortal, and could not stay there forever. 
観音堂の神性は不朽であるかもしれませんが、僕にはいずれ死が訪れるため、永遠に観音堂で暮らせるわけではありませんでした。

Eventually I had to step out back into daily life, and the pouring rain.
結局日々の生活、そして雨天の外に戻る必要がありました。

Once I reached the main temple, however, my soggy sojourn was rewarded through the new addition to my book of signed seals. 
本堂に着いたら、素敵な御朱印を頂きましたので、雨が降っていても嬉しかったです。

As the thirty-third site along the Shintatsu 33, for many this may mark their last stop on the pilgrimage route. 
信達三十三観音の33番目の観音堂ですので、多くの方はここで巡礼を終了すると思います。

With the beloved Yanagawa Hachiman shrine nearby, it might be a good opportunity to shift gears and begin visiting this region’s famous shrines.
愛されている梁川八幡神社がすぐ近くにありますので、神社の御朱印を集め始める機会として良いかもしれません。

No matter how you continue your journey, I pray that you encounter better weather, and wish you Godspeed!
