Abukuma River, a Wintering Place for Swans

Every winter swans make the long journey from Russia to the Abukuma river in Date City. It’s always refreshing to see them as they arrive with the cold air of winter. There are two well-known locations for observing the swans in Date City; one is from "Isazawa Mizube no Shōgakkō", along Route 349. Though there are steps that lead down to the water from the parking lot, the area is currently closed due to damage from a typhoon. You can also see swans the swans from the Abukuma cycling road in Date town, where Route 399 crosses over the Abukuma river.

Date City's Anpogaki and Ginza

In December, I was able to try anpogaki, Date City’s partially dried persimmons, for the first time and I was surprised by how much I liked them! Although persimmons are usually more subtle in flavor, when left to dry and shrivel up in the cold of Fukushima, the sweetness of the fruit condenses and they taste like candy. But not only are anpogaki tasty, they’re also beautiful to look at!

When left out to dry, anpogaki are usually strung up in rows that can be seen in the windows of homes throughout Date City. Being surrounded by anpogaki is one of the many advantages of living in the countryside. However, right now, even the people of Tokyo can enjoy viewing anpogaki. Nearly 400 of Date City’s own anpogaki were peeled and hung up to dry on the streets of Ginza! I visited the display over the holidays. It was nicely lit and far enough away from the main street as to avoid being disturbed by the bustling crowds.

Camellia Flowers at Takako

One of the particularly striking things about the winter months in Date is the bold red of the camellia flowers that bloom amidst the snow. In spite of the fact that it appears to be fragile, the camellia unfurls its buds into a resilient flower amidst the elemental cold of winter. The bloom punctuates yet another cycle of the seasons, and brings a small joy to all who observe it.

If you would like to see camellia flowers, I recommend visiting Takako pond. Camellia flowers line the footpath that climbs the hill near the pond. A walker can see the surrounding vineyards, rice fields, and houses nearby while enjoying a view of the snowcapped Adzuma mountain range in the distance. Takako pond is about 900 meters from Takako station and there is also a parking lot.
