Local Hero Saitou Hikonai ・ 義民の斎藤彦内

Date City is known as the ancestral home of the famous Date Clan, but it is also the resting place of another significant historical figure. Saitou Hikonai was executed on the bank of the Ubukazawa River and is memorialized at Fukugen Temple in former Date Town.

 伊達市は有名な伊達氏発祥の地として知られていますが、色々な歴史上の人物がここに住んでいました。その一人は江戸時代の斎藤彦内（さいとうひこない）でした。斎藤は産ヶ沢川のほとりで処刑されて、伊達町の福源寺に祀られています。

This year marked 270 years since Saitou Hikonai’s execution as the leader of what would become known as the Tengu Kaijou Soudou, or the Tengu’s Circulating Letter Revolt. The revolt began in 1749, when heavy snowfall ruined the year’s harvest. Unable to afford the annual rice tax and still have enough to feed their families, the farmers petitioned for the tax to be lowered.

 今年は天狗廻状騒動のリーダーとして斎藤が処刑されてから270年目になります。騒動は1749年に始まりました。その年は、雪によって田んぼが深刻な被害を受けました。家族を養って税金を払うのに十分な米がなかったので、農民が減税のために嘆願しました。

In some places the farmers prevailed, but in the area that would become modern Koori Town and Date City, initial petitions were ignored and the tax remained unchanged. In response, nearly 20,000 people rioted. They were organized through a letter that circulated so quickly it came to be called the Tengu’s Circulating Letter.

 いくつかの場所では、農民が勝ちましたが、現在の桑折町と伊達市になった地域で税は変わりませんでした。それによって、約2万人の暴動が起こりました。天狗廻状として知られるようになった手紙を通して組織されました。

Although the tax was lowered as a result of the riot, a number of those thought to be involved were tortured. Saitou is said to have surrendered himself as the leader of the revolt. In the following year, at least three men were executed, including Saito.

 暴動の結果として税金は引き下げられましたが、関与していると思われる多くの人々が拷問を受けました。斎藤は首謀者として捕まったと言われています。その次の年には、斎藤を含む少なくとも3人の男性が処刑されました。

Today Saitou is remembered as a gimin, “one who sacrificed onself for justice.”

現在では斎藤は義民として覚えられています。

Beniya Ridge in Hobara ・ 保原町の紅屋峠

Beniya Ridge is in Date City’s town of Hobara, next to Hashirazawa Elementary School. With nearly one thousand cherry trees planted neatly along the side of the hill, the ridge is one of the most popular places to go flower viewing in the Spring.

 紅屋峠は伊達市の保原町、柱沢小学校のとなりにあります。約1，000桜の本が丘に沿ってきれいに植えられていて、この峠は春に花見に行くのに最も人気のある場所の一つです。

We visited earlier this month when the flowers were in full bloom.

 花が見ごろになった今月初めに訪れました。

At Beniya Ridge, anyone can adopt their very own cherry tree. Foster parents are able to create a short message commemorating a birth, wedding, or other event to be hung on their tree for other visitors to view.

 紅屋峠では、誰でも桜の里親になれます。里親は出産や結婚などの記念日について短いメッセージを書き、他の訪問者が見えるように木に掛けることができます。

It is definitely one of the best places to go flower viewing in Date City.

確かに伊達市で花見に行くのに最適な場所の一つだと思います。

The 2019 Spring Festival at Hobara Yakushi Hall ・ 保原薬師堂の平成31年春祭り

In the heart of Hobara Town, Hobara Yakushi Hall is famous as the site of the earliest-blooming cherry blossoms in all of Date City.

保原町の中心にある保原薬師堂は伊達市内の最も早く咲く桜の名所です。

We were lucky enough to be able to visit during the Buddhist temple’s spring festival, which takes place yearly on April 8^th. Surrounded by cherry blossoms in full bloom, we walked through the impressive entrance gate.

我々は運が良くて、そのお寺で毎年4月8日に行う春祭りに参加する事が出来ました。

満開の桜に囲まれて、堂々とした門を通りました。

The temple complex houses a number of Date City Cultural Assets, including the temple gate and the two statues within it.

この山門や門の中の像を含めて、保原薬師堂には伊達市の文化財がいくつもあります。

While the wooden statues of Buddhist guardian deities Misshaku Kongō and Naraen Kongō (more commonly known as Angyō and Ungyō) are protected behind a chain-link screen, the more recently crafted temple bell is easily accessible in its concrete tower.

密迹金剛(阿形)と那羅延金剛(吽形)の木像は金網の後ろにありますが、それより後に近作られた釣鐘はコンクリートの鐘楼の中で開放されています。

Of course, I couldn’t help but ring it numerous times.

もちろん、僕は何回も鳴らしてしまいました。

That isn’t to say that we were alone at the complex; by and by, people were streaming in to witness a Buddhist ceremony inside the main hall.

薬師堂には私達しかいなかった訳ではありません。どんどん人々が仏教の儀式を見に本堂に入っていきました。

We were also invited to attend, and I was kindly offered a front-row seat.

我々も招待されて、僕は前列の席に座りました。

The altar was adorned with offerings.

祭壇には供物がありました。

In the ensuing fire ceremony, characteristic of Shingon Buddhism, we watch as the priest took petitions written by the faithful on small wooden sticks, and read each aloud as he tossed it into a fire built atop the altar.

行ったのは火を使う儀式で、真言宗の特徴です。信者の祈願を小さな木製の棒に書いて、法師はそれぞれを読みながら祭壇の火の中に投げ入れました。

We heard prayers for health, traffic safety, happy family life, and regional reconstruction; and although we didn’t offer any prayers of our own to the flames, it was heartwarming to see that the people of Hobara Town have a place to offer prayers that also abounds with beauty every spring.

健康、交通安全、家内幸福、地方復活などが祈願されていました。我々は自分の祈りを火にあげませんでしたが、美しい場所で毎年保原町の人々の祈願があげられるところを見て感動しました。

Date City’s Takako in Kamihobara is a place of historical significance. It was the founding place of the Date Clan, the ancestral home of everyone’s favorite one-eyed samurai, Date Masamune! But have you heard of the Twenty Scenic Views of Takako?

伊達市の上保原にある高子は歴史豊かな場所です。有名な伊達氏が発祥した地で、みんなが大好き片目の侍、伊達政宗に関係があります。しかし、「高子二十境」はご存知ですか？

The Takako Twenty Scenic Views Re-imagined, “Zenshi Tenkaizu”  by Sasaki Saburo

The twenty scenic views are twenty sites within the Takako Basin that inspired three generations of an 18th century farming family, Haryo Kumasaka (1709-1764), his son Taishu (1739-1803), and a grandson, Bankoku (1767-1830), to write kanshi, a form of traditional Japanese poetry written in Chinese. The Kumasaka family gave names to these sites, and wrote a poem for each one.

この二十境は熊阪（くまさか）という十八世紀の農家の三世代に影響を与えた二十の美しい場所です。熊阪覇陵（はりょう）（1709－1764）、息子台州（たいしゅう）（1739－1830）、孫盤谷（はんこく）（1767－1830）の三人が二十境を見て、名前を付けて漢詩を書きました。

A contemporary artist and painter whose works are housed in as far flung places as The Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Tani Bunchō was also inspired by the twenty scenic views and the Kumasakas’ poetry. He contributed twenty landscape paintings of the views of Takako. The poems and paintings were then published by Taishu as a set titled “Eibohen,” which sold all over the country.

ヒューストン美術館で絵が収容されている現代の画家、谷文晁も二十境や熊阪の漢詩に影響を与えました。台州は、漢詩と文晁の20枚の風景画をまとめて「永慕編（えいぼへん）」という本をつくり、全国で販売されました。

Takako is still the well of inspiration that it was then. Last month, an exhibit titled “私たちの高子二十境展”or “Our Takako Twenty Scenic Views”was held at the Yanagawa Art Museum, free to the public. And just as the title implies, numerous interpretations of the charm of Takako were represented by the artwork on display at this event.

高子二十境は今でも芸術を刺激しています。先月、梁川美術館で「私たちの高子二十境展」という展示が無料で開催されました。そしてタイトルが示すとおり、このイベントで展示されていた絵には高子の魅力がたくさんありました。

Bunchō’s landscapes were on display, now filled in with vibrant colors.

文晁の風景画は鮮やかな色で描かれ、展示されていました。

The Kumasakas’ poetry was brought to life by the hand of multiple talented calligraphers.

熊阪家族の漢詩は複数の才能ある書家の手によって命が吹き込まれました。

The space was crowded with locals’ depictions of the twenty scenic views as they stand today.

ギャラリーは地元の人々による現在の二十境の描写で賑わっていました。

Even a few maps were on display!

いくつかの地図でも表示されていました！

But ｓome of the best works could be found in a section reserved for the artist, Mr. Sasaki Saburo. The exaggerated cliffs in his paintings echo Bunchō’s work.

しかし最高の絵画のいくつかは佐々木三郎展でみつけることができました。彼の絵の強調された崖は文晁の風景画を反映しています。

There were also workshops to attend and a chance to purchase one of the few books in print anthologizing the original poems, paintings, and more recent creations. But don’t worry! If you missed the exhibit, you can still participate in the Takako Walking Tour held every Summer by the “Enjoy Takako Lake Society.”

ワークショップに参加したり、オリジナルの漢詩や絵画、いくつくかの新しい作品を集めた本を買えるチャンスもありました。でも心配しないで！展示を見逃した場合でも、まだ「高子沼を楽しむ会」によって毎年開催されるツアーに参加することができます。
