Hobara Rice Planting Experience ・ 保原町の田植え体験

In the past couple of years Fukushima rice and sake has been highly ranked within Japan and Date City is no exception!

過去数年間で福島県の米と日本酒は日本国内で高く評価されており、伊達市も例外ではありません。

Year round, local farmers can be seen outside toiling long hours in the fields. This month members of the community were invited to experience rice planting for ourselves. Two English teachers and I also joined in, fully prepared for the summer weather.

 春から秋にかけて、地元の農家が水田で長時間耕働いているのを見ることができます。今月伊達市の皆さんが田植えの体験に招待されました。私も、暑さに備えて、二人の英語教師と一緒に体験しに行きました！

There is an Italian saying that rice begins in water and ends in wine. The same can be said for the rice we planted in Hobara Town. But it won’t end up in an Italian wine risotto! Come Winter, this rice will be sold as Date City’s junmai ginjō, a high quality sake!

 米は水で始まって、ワインで終わるというイタリア語のフレーズがあります。私たちが保原町で田植えした米にも同じことが言えます。イタリアのワインリゾットにはならないけど、冬がくると、この米が伊達市の純米吟醸酒となって売られます！

Hobara Elementary School's Traffic Safety Parade ・ 保原小学校の交通安全パレード

On May 15^th, children from Hobara Elementary School paraded through central Hobara Town to promote traffic safety. They assembled in the parking lot of the city hall, under an increasingly cloudy sky.

5月15日に保原小学校の子供達が交通安全を促すために保原町の中心で鼓笛パレードを行いました。曇り空の下、伊達市役所の駐車場に集まりました。

After numerous speeches, the parade started and the children processed onto public streets.

数々の挨拶が終わり、パレードが始まり、子供達が道路に行進し始めました。

In skillful unison, the children marched bravely on west towards downtown Hobara.

保原町の商店街に向かって、子供達が堂々と一斉に行進しました。

Even at this time, umbrellas began to sprout up above the spectators.

この時、いくつかの傘があちこちに現れました。

Despite the arrival of lightly pattering rain, most of us were too spellbound by the performance to notice.

弱い雨が降っても、皆さんはじっと子供達の演技を見ていて、雨を気にしませんでした。

Yet as the parade entered Hobara Town’s famous Jinya Street, we couldn’t help but notice the rain.

しかし、パレードが保原町の有名な陣屋通りに入ると、雨が気になるようになりました。

It had begun to pour in earnest.

強い雨が降り始まったのです。

Nonetheless, the residents of Hobara Town chose to brave the elements and support their future generations.

それにもかかわらず、保原町の住民は子供達を応援するために雨を我慢しました。

As the procession neared Hobara Elementary School, the sky opened, releasing a relentless deluge.

パレードが保原小学校に近づくと、土砂降りになりました。

The children practically swam the last hundred meters to the refuge of their school.

小学校までの最後の100mは、子供達はほとんど泳いでいるように見えました。

And as they arrived, the clouds relinquished their wrath, the rains lightened, and the sun shone again upon Hobara Elementary School.

Knit Goods are Cheaper! ・ ニットグッズは安い！

Fukushima’s Knit Fair only happens a few times a year, so Tony and I walked to Hobara’s Community Center to have a look!

 ふくしまのニットフェアは年に数回しか開催されないので、行かないのはもったいないと思いました。トニーと一緒にフェアを見に保原市民センターへ行きました！

The auditorium was full of clothes! And there were many more people than we had expected. We ran into a couple of big personalities who told us exactly what they thought of it all ~ the knit goods fair has better prices!

 講堂は服でいっぱいでした！そして私たちが思っていたよりも人々がたくさんいました。とくに面白い人々に出会って、彼らが思ったことをはっきり言われました～このフェアは値段が一番良い！

Every piece of clothing was one of a kind!

 服はすべて一点ものでした！

Everything was handmade!

 そして職人の手で作られていました！

Even some of the designers were there to talk about the huge variety of styles.

 多種多様な服について話すデザイナーも何人かいました。

Even Tony was able to find something!

 トニーもいいものを見つけました！

We’re looking forward to the next time the fair comes to Date City!

私たちはフェアがまた伊達市で行われるのを楽しみにしています！

Genkidzukuri in Hobara Town ・ 保原町で元気作り

Earlier this month, we headed to the Ōtatsume district of Hobara Town to take part in one of the Genki-dzukuri senior exercise sessions held bi-weekly at the neighborhood assembly hall.

今月の前半、保原町の大立目集会所に行き、週2回行っている元気作り会に参加しました。

We all exercised in unison to a voice recording, similar to NHK's famous Rajio Taisō.

皆はNHKの有名なラジオ体操のような指導の録音により一斉に運動しました。

Despite being an exercise routine for seniors, we found it surprisingly strenuous.

高齢者向けの運動だったのに、意外と疲れました。

Halfway through the session we took a break, and enjoyed gigantic and delicious locally-grown strawberries.

途中は休んで、美味しくて巨大な苺を頂きました。

We were able to enjoy a performance by a professional shakuhachi flutist.

尺八奏者の方の演奏も楽しみました。

 He also participated in the day's exercises!

彼はその日の運動にも参加してくださいました!

With the rapid aging of Japanese society, particularly in rural areas, Date City has made a strong commitment to preserving the health of our beloved elders.

特に地方で進んでいる、日本の社会の高齢化により、伊達市は年長者の健康を保つように力を入れています。

Not only did we enjoy meeting some of the kind residents of Hobara Town's Ōtatsume district, but we fit in a day's workout as well!

この日は保原町の大立目の年配者に会ってもらうだけではなく、一日分の運動もできました!
