 Date City Community Fire Brigade Mobile Pump Deployment Competition ・ 伊達市消防団小型ポンプ操法大会

On June 23^rd, I lined up with my fellow community firefighters to participate in the Date City Community Fire Brigade Mobile Pump Deployment Competition.

6月23日に伊達市消防団小型ポンプ操法大会に出場しました。

We had practiced twice weekly for two months to prepare for this event, and as we neared the start, we meticulously set up our equipment to ensure a perfect performance.

二ヶ月の間に週二回練習しました。自分たちの出番が近づくと、完璧に実行ができるように細心の注意払って機器を準備しました。

Finally, we were prepared, and stood ready at our starting position.

とうとう準備ができて、開始の位置に着きました。

At our squad leader’s command, we rushed to our action stations.

指揮者の命令で急いで消火配置に着きました。

Our squad leader left to announce the beginning of the deployment.

指揮者は操法の開始を伝えるため、前に出ました。

As our deployment procedure began, our squad leader ran off with a roll of firehose, while the rest of us connected the pump equipment.

操法が始まり、指揮者がホースを持って走り出し、残りの団員は機器をポンプにつなぎました。

My role was to hold the suction house into a pool of water and ensure that no air entered the pump; I had learned from experience that even a small amount of air can stop the flow of water and render the pump temporarily useless. With my arm deep in water, I waited anxiously for the sound of water streaming out the nozzle from across the competition ground.

僕の役割はポンプに空気が入らないように水槽の中に吸管というホースを持つ事でした。空気が少しでも入ってしまうと、水の流れが止まり、ポンプが一時的に使えなくなる事を以前の経験によりよく分かっていました。腕を水槽の水に深く入れ、大会所の向こうの管鎗(かんそう)から噴出する水の音を気にしながら待ちました。

I was relieved to hear the water finally jet out towards the target.

的へ吹き出す水の音を聞き、ほっとしました。

Thankfully, the water kept gushing out until the very end of the extinguishing routine.

幸い、最後まで水が流れました。

Although our group of community firefighters didn’t place well in the competition, the firefighting skills I developed are more valuable than any award. I have also honed my resolve to study and practice even harder to become a more competent community firefighter.

我々の支団は優勝できませんでしたが、技術の成長が自分にはどんな賞より貴重なのです。それで以前より勉強したり練習したりして、今より有能な消防団員になる決意が固くなりました。

Hobara Town's Chōkokuji Temple ・ 保原町の長谷寺

Just southeast of Hobara Elementary School is an historic and locally important Buddhist temple of the Shingon Sect, Chōkokuji.

保原町の保原小学校の南東には、長谷寺(ちょうこくじ)と言う、歴史的で地域の大切なお寺があります。

We were first interested in it as the current location of a Date City Cultural Property, the former gate to Hobara Town’s Jinya Street.

保原町の陣屋通りから移動された長屋門は今ここにあり、その門は伊達市の文化財なので最初から興味がありました。 

However, beyond the gate lies the 140-year-old temple, which is both historic and beautiful in its own way.

しかし、門の向こうには140年前建てたお寺らがあり、それも歴史が深く、美しいです。

The resident Buddhist priest very kindly explained the temple’s history, as well patiently answered my numerous questions about Shingon Buddhism.

そこのご住職である平林寛征さんは長谷寺の歴史について話し、そして真言宗について私の数々の質問に根気強く答えてくださいました。

We were impressed by the ornate decorations and devotional objects.

綺麗な飾りや仏像などを見て、感動しました。

There is also a mural of area temples painted on sliding panels.

地域のお寺が書いている襖絵もあります。

The temple garden is very pretty; I particularly liked the statue of Shingon sect founder Kūkai.

お寺の庭は美しくて、真言宗の創立者である空海の像が特に気に入りました。

There is also a pagoda, made by a local carpenter as an act of devotion.

庭には、地域の大工さんが一人で作った仏塔もあります。

We had the privilege of seeing a mural of the life of the Gautama Buddha, painted inside a storage building by a local artist.

地域の画家が蔵の中で描いた釈迦如来の人生の壁画も見せて頂きました。

We are very thankful to the kind Buddhist priest for showing us around the temple.

お寺を見せてくださった優しいお坊さんに感謝します。
