AbuQ Beer Garden ・ あぶQビアガー電

On a recent Friday evening, I boarded an Abukuma Kyūkō train at Fukushima Station, bubble tea in hand.

最近の金曜夕方、タピオカティを持ちながら福島駅で阿武隈急行の電車に乗りました。

Not that I intended to drink bubble tea all night, though – I was embarking on the AbuQ Beer Garden!

しかし、タピオカティをずっと飲むつもりではなかった…あぶQビアガー電に乗ったからです!

The interior of the train was decorated with hanging paper lanterns, reminiscent of a Japanese izakaya

車内は提灯で飾られて、居酒屋の雰囲気がありました。.

Having boarded at Fukushima Station, I was on the train before any of my dinner companions, but as we travelled northwest more and more of my coworkers joined me.

福島駅で乗ったので、自分の団体では一人目でしたが、電車が北東へ行くと、どんどん乗って来ました。

Finally we reached Abukuma Station in Miyagi Prefecture. It had also been decorated for the event.

結局宮城県にあるあぶくま駅に着きました。この夜の行事のために、駅も飾られていました。

Taking our seats, we were served with platters of meat and vegetables, waiting patiently for us to fry them up.

席についてから、肉と野菜の大皿が出て、焼き始めるのを待ち望みました。

Of course, beverages were in ample supply.

もちろん、飲み物もたっぷりありました。

While sipping our drinks, we eagerly fried the first of many servings.

飲み物を飲みながら、一皿目を楽しく焼きました。

Bringing in our own food was also an option, so we supplemented the provided pork with various other cuts of meat.

持ち込みも可能だったので、最初にもらった豚肉の他に色んな肉を追加しました。

The night also featured a raffle of Abukuma Kyukou goods, though I didn't win anything. However, I was happy enough with the ample food and drink. On this particular night my consumptive abilities were limited by sickness, but I am eagerly looking forward to attending again soon!

阿武隈急行のグッズの抽選もありましたが、僕は何も当たりませんでした。しかし、食べ物と飲み物のご馳走だけで大満足でした。この夜は病気で、あまり食べたり飲んだりできませんでしたが、次回は楽しみにしています！

Yanagawa Town's Heart Monument ・ 梁川町のハート型モニュメント

Nearby Yanagawa Town’s famous Hachiman Shrine lies the beloved Masamune Prosperity Plaza.

梁川町の名所である八幡神社の近くには、現地の人たちに愛されている政宗にぎわい広場があります。

As this Hachiman Shrine is famous as the place where Megohime met with the Date clan on her journey to become Date Masamune’s wife, it only makes sense that this has become recognized as a spot for new love to blossom. With this in mind, a heart monument has been built here.

伊達政宗と結婚するため、愛姫が伊達家に会った所としてここ八幡神社が有名ですので、新鮮な恋が咲く場所として認められている事も当然です。それを心に留めて、ハート型モニュメントが作られています。

The inside of the heart is available for placing padlocks, in the fashion of “love locks” found on famous bridges worldwide (e.g., Paris’ Pons des Arts). Another option, unique to this love lock location, is the opportunity to place a wooden tablet with one’s wish written upon it.

パリ市のポンデザールなど、世界中の名橋で見られる「愛の南京鍵」と同じようにこのハート型モニュメントに南京鍵が付けられます。そしてこのハート型モニュメントの特色は自分の願いを書いたハートの絵馬を掛けられることです。

These wooden tablets, as well as padlocks, are available for sale at the nearby Yanagawa Machi no Eki.

この絵馬と南京鍵は近くのまちの駅やながわで売られています。

Shannen and I took the opportunity to write such tablets and post them.

シャンネンと僕も絵馬に願いを書いて掛けました。

私達の絵馬には何が書いてあるでしょうか。

You will need to go to the heart monument in Yanagawa Town to read them and find out.

梁川町のハート型モニュメントに行って、自分で読む必要がありますね。

And on your way there, we suggest buying a tablet at the Yanagawa Machi no Eki and writing your wish upon it, to hang up at the monument. Or if you are traveling as a couple, you could buy a padlock to place there. At  350yen, you can still afford to buy one while saving up for wedding rings!

そして途中、まちの駅やながわに寄り、ハート型モニュメントに掛ける絵馬を買い、願いを書く事も勧めます。それと、二人で行くなら、あそこに付ける南京鍵も買えばいいでしょうね。値段も350円と、結婚指輪のために貯金しているところでも手が届きます!

Yamafunyu's Hydrangea Park ・ 山舟生のあじさい公園

This month we visited Kubota Ajisai Park, where if you climb up high enough and don’t get lost, you’ll find a magic golden hydrangea!

 今月はくぼたあじさい公園を見に行きました！あそこは、十分に高く登っても迷子にならないなら、魔法の金のあじさいを見つけられるかもしれません!

That’s a lie, but it sure would fit the mystical atmosphere of the park. Kubota Ajisai Park is said to contain nearly 10,000 hydrangea plants and just as many critters to meet along the path.

 それはうそですけど、公園はおとぎ話の雰囲気にけっこう合います。くぼたあじさい公園には約1万本のあじさいとそのぐらいの小さい友達がいました。

Earlier in the park was host to the Yamafunyu Hydrangea Festival, during which there was a musical performance and the hydrangea were illuminated by candlelight. Unfortunately, we couldn’t attend the festival, but I was glad to see the flowers before the season is over.

 今月上旬、くぼたあじさい公園では山舟生あじさいまつりがありました。ライブ音楽があり、あじさいがろうそくの光で照らされていました。残念ながら、私たちは行けなかったが、季節が終わる前に花を見ることができて良かった。

There were more hydrangea plants than I have ever seen in one place before. We decided that our favorite was the most common dark blue.

 今までに見たあじさいが咲いていている場所よりも多くのあじさいがありました。私たちが一番好きな色は最も一般的なブルーだと決めました。

We really did get lost for a moment, which is why we must have missed the path to the golden hydrangea. Maybe next year!

やっぱりしばらくの間迷子になりました。その理由で金色のあじさいへの道を見つけられなかったかな。来年は見つけるでしょう！

 Ryūhōji Temple’s Lotus Garden ・ 龍宝寺の蓮

Fukushima has faced endless rainfall lately, which does not bode well for the rice, the peaches, or the festivals, but one thing all this rain is good for is the lotuses. Hoping to see some for ourselves, we visited Ryūhōji Temple in Yanagawa Town.

最近福島で雨がたくさん降りました。米、桃、または祭りにはよくないですが、蓮にとってこの雨は最高ですね。一目見たいと思って、私たちは梁川町の龍宝寺に行きました。

While the lotus garden is like a scene out of a Ghibli movie, the temple is well worth the trip in any season. The gate and bell tower are both adorned with charming grass thatched roofs, and within the grounds stands Onishi Kannondō, the 33rd of the Shintatsu 33 Kannon Pilgrimage Sites.

蓮はジブリの映画のシーンと似ていますが、寺はどの季節に行ってもいいと思います。寺の山門、鐘楼は茅葺き屋根で、境内に、信達三十三観音巡礼の第三十三番札所、鬼石観音堂が建っています。

Onishi Kannondō was originally constructed by the 12th head of the Date Clan, Date Shigemune. Known for his expensive tastes, Shigemune is said to have offered gold dust, horses, swords and other lavish gifts to the Ashikaga Shōgun. His goal was to represent his family as not only the strongest clan in Oshu, but also as the most fashionable. Which is to say, the site of the lotuses would have been well in line with the 12th lord’s cultured persona.

鬼石観音堂は伊達氏の12代伊達成宗が再建しました。成宗は砂金、馬、太刀などの進物を足利将軍家に献上し、伊達家が奥州で一番の実力があることをアピールしていました。寺の蓮は、12代の性格とよく似ていると思いました。

But Ryūhōji Temple’s connection to the Date Clan doesn’t end there! During the Edo period, the temple was the bettōji of Yanagawa Hachiman Shrine, the patron shrine of the Date Clan. As bettōji, Ryūhōji Temple was responsible for the maintenance of Yanagawa Hachiman Shrine, which stands just around the corner.

しかし、龍宝寺と伊達氏の関係はそれだけで終わりません！江戸時代には、龍宝寺は伊達氏の氏神、梁川八幡神社の別当でした。別当として、龍宝寺は近くに建っている梁川八幡神社の維持に責任がありました。
