Did you participate in the AbuQ stamp rally?
There are twenty-four stations along the Abukuma Line, from Fukushima Station, through Date City, all the way to Tsukinoki Station in Miyagi Prefecture. Since Typhoon 19 came through the city, many of the stations became temporarily inaccessible. However, the AbuQ itself is still running and the AbuQ Stamp Rally finished successfully!
Tony and I have visited over a dozen stations since this past summer. Sometimes it was hard to find the stamps themselves, but the people at the stations were always kind and helpful! We’re hoping they hold another stamp rally sometime soon!

On November 28th multiple craft workshops set up shop in Date City Hall’s lobby!
In Date City there are a number of residents with disabilities who commute to offices at which they create handmade goods, including everything from salad dressing to knitwear. And it’s all very high quality! Tony and I had been looking forward to one booth’s doughnuts since we tried them last year.
But first I started my Christmas shopping. One booth had handmade keychains and other recycled leather products for sale.
I also bought an origami turtle. I’ll do my best to put it together!
Another table was covered in flowers and they were selling dish towels with hand-stitched patterns!

Here in Date City, we receive our delicious drinking water from the Surikami River, a tributary of the Abukuma River.
In mid-November, I participated in a tour of the Surikamigawa Dam and Surikami Water Purification Plant offered by Date City’s General Waterworks Department.
We tour-takers assembled in the morning at the City Hall in Hobara before boarding the city’s bus.
The bus turned onto nearby route 399 towards our first stop, the Surikamigawa Dam.
The road follows the river valley, which had become brilliant with Autumn colors.
Finally the dam came into view
The drinking water for northern-central Fukushima, including Date City, comes from the reservoir behind the rock-fill dam.
The spillway protects the dam in case of incredibly heavy rain.
As of yet, water has only flowed over the spillway once, during a test shortly after construction.
I was impressed by the scale of the facility.
From the top of the dam there is a beautiful view of the idyllic valley below.
Finally the door to the interior was opened, and we descended through tunnels to deep below the dam.
Eventually we emerged at the bottom and stepped back outside.
Standing at the bottom, we could feel the immensity of the dam.
We could also hear the cries of nearby monkeys, though it took a while to spot them.
Can you see them?
The information center was also intriguing.
Having had our fill of the rock-fill dam, we went to fill our stomachs at the nearby Moniwa-no-Yu Hot Spring Center.
The soba noodles were particularly good.
They were matched perfectly with hot, crispy pieces of tempura.
After lunch, we went downstream to the Surikami Water Purification Plant.
Though downstream of the dam, it sits high above the cities and towns of the Abukuma River valley, to which it supplies safe and delicious drinking water.
The vigilant staff is on duty twenty-four hours a day, year-round.
As a by-product of the water purification process, this facility produces a few tons of cake every day – though none of it is edible.
As the tour finally ended, I couldn’t help but be moved at seeing how the inhabitants of the region have come together to build and maintain a vast infrastructure which makes modern life possible.
