Hobara Castle ・ 保原城

In order to help slow the spread of the new coronavirus, it is important for everyone to avoid the three C’s:
1.) Closed spaces with poor ventilation.
2.) Crowded places with many people nearby.
3.) Close-contact settings such as close-range conversations.
For many of us this means staying indoors, but it’s important to step outside for fresh air sometimes. While you may not be able to go far, a short walk could be an opportunity to discover more about your neighborhood. For example, I found out that Date City’s town of Hobara was once the site of a castle!
新型コロナウイルス感染拡大防止のため、3つの密を避けるのは大事なことです：
1）換気が悪い密閉空間
2）多数が集まる密集場所
3）間近で会話や発声をする密接場面
私たちの多くにとって、これは家の中で待つことを意味しますが、外に出ることも大事です。遠くに行くことができないけど、短い散歩は近所について発見する機会であるかもしれません。例えば、私は伊達市の保原町に城があったことを知りました！

Although there is no trace of the castle to be seen today, there are some indications of the neighborhood’s history: While I was walking, I found that properties between the 7/11 near Date City Hall and Nakano Clinic are addressed “shiro no nai” (城ノ内), or “inside the castle.”
今は保原城の跡は残っていないけど、近所の歴史のなごりがあります。伊達市役所の近くのセブンイレブンからなかのクリニックまでの間を散歩したとき、いくつかの建物の住所に「城ノ内」と書いてあるのを見つけました。

Next to Nakano Clinic is a marker that reads “Between the Kan’ei (1624 – 1644) and Kanbun Era (1661 – 1673), two generations of Uesugi Clan vassals, Ogoshiheizaemon Masamichi and his son, Kiyomasa, stayed at the castle while serving as military commanders in Hobara. The neighborhood of Shiro no Nai is said to be all that is left of that castle. During the Tenbun Era (1532 – 1555), Date Clan vassals Nakajima Munetada, succeeded by his son Munemoto, are also thought to have occupied the castle. From the third to the fifth year (1598 - 1600) of the Keicho Era (1596 – 1615), Uesugi Kagekatsu’s chamberlain, Ōishi Harimanokaminobutsuna stayed for three years.”
中野クリニックの隣に、「寛永（1624－1644）から寛文（1661－1673）の頃、上杉家の家臣小越平左衛門政道・清政父子が二代にわたり保原鎮将として居城した。字城ノ内一帯は、その城跡と言われている。天分（1532－1555）の頃は、伊達家の家臣中島宗忠その子宗求が居城したと言われ、慶長（1596－1615）三年から五年（1598－1600）は上杉景券の城代大石播磨守信綱が三年間居城したと言う。」と書いてある標柱があります。

Hobara Castle was destroyed hundreds of years ago but the moat remained to some extent and helped to shape the neighborhood that exists today. While the waterways here are not remains of the moat that once encircled Hobara Castle, certain areas are said to mirror the shape of that moat.
保原城は数百年前に破壊されましたが、堀はある程度残っていて、今日存在する近所の形に影響を与えました。ここの水路はかつて取り囲まれた堀の跡ではないけど、あるところはその堀の形状を反映していると言われています。
