The other day, I went to Ryōzen Town’s Oguni District in search of their famous komahime-zakura cherry tree.
I never found that tree, but upon inquiring at the Oguni District Exchange Hall, I was told about the Oguni District’s true claim to fame: Mr. SATŌ Chubō.
SATŌ Chubō was a member of the lower house of the Imperial Diet during the Meiji Era, as seen in records kept at the exchange hall.
He also worked as a school teacher.
However, he is most notable as the founder of Japan’s first agricultural cooperative.
If you have ever noticed how often you see the letters “JA” during a day spent in rural Japan, you know how important agricultural cooperatives are to Japanese society.
A photograph at the exchange hall shows the location of that first cooperative’s office.
The building in the foreground is a school, which stood where the current exchange hall is located.
Outside the exchange hall stands a monument commemorating Chubō.
Let’s think about how a man born here contributed to the formation of modern Japan, whenever we pass through this serene community in the south of Date City.
