Remote International Exchange Activities ・ リモート国際交流活動
I was very busy in February.
2月は僕がとっても忙しかったです。
Date City is the Tōkyō 2020 Olympic and Paralympic “Arigatō Host Town” for the Republic of Guyana.
伊達市は東京2020オリンピック・パラリンピックにおけるガイアナ共和国の復興ありがとうホストタウンです。
As such, Date City has been engaging in exchange events with Olympic and Paralympic officials from the Republic of Guyana (please see the August 2019 Update).
そのため、伊達市はガイアナ共和国のオリンピック・パラリンピック関係者と交流活動をしています(2019年8月の国際交流員日記にご覧ください)。
However, the current pandemic has made international travel nearly impossible.
しかし、現在の感染症の影響で海外旅行が難しくなっています。
Therefore we have turned to remote exchange activities, such as holding videoconferences.
従って、テレビ会議などのリモート交流活動に頼っています。
We had two such videoconferences in February.
2月にはこんなテレビ会議が2回できました。
Even with such technology, a human interpreter is needed to bridge the language barrier.
そんな技術があっても、言葉の壁を超えるために人間である通訳者が必要です。
That human has been yours truly.
その人間は僕です。
Even before the videoconferences were held, the preparation involved translating numerous emails and other documents.
テレビ会議を行う前にも、多くのメールなどの文書の翻訳が必要でした。
The time difference between Japan and Guyana is thirteen hours.
日本とガイアナの時差は13時間です。
In order to meet with our colleagues in the Republic of Guyana during their morning, the meetings were generally held after 9 PM here in Japan.
ガイアナ共和国の相手にガイアナ時間の朝に会えるように、会議は大体日本の夜9時以降に開催されました。
Even though I was very tired at the time, it was a memorable experience for which I am now thankful.
当時はとっても疲れましたが、この印象的な経験ができた事は今、ありがたいです。

Letter-Writing Class at Ōishi Elementary School ・ 大石小学校で手紙書き授業
On the last Friday of February, I made my first visit to Ryōzen Town’s Ōishi Elementary School.
2月の最後の金曜日に、僕は初めて霊山町の大石小学校を訪ねました。
The third- and fourth-year students are sending letters to my little sister’s volunteer fire station in the American state of Montana.
大石小の3・4年生は僕の妹が務めているアメリカのモンタナ州にあるボランティア消防署へ手紙を送ってくれます。
After a quick self-introduction, I helped the students with letter composition.
簡単な自己紹介をしてから、生徒の手紙の英作文を手伝いました。
After they finished their letters, I had the chance to Tell the students about the destination fire station.
生徒が手紙を書いた後、手紙の行き先である消防署について話す機会がありました。
Finally, I showed them how to address their envelopes, in preparation for its transpacific voyage.
最後に、手紙が太平洋を渡る旅ができるように、封筒に宛先を書く方法を教えました。
Though this was my first visit to Ōishi Elementary, I sadly suspect that it will also be my last.
初めての大石小学校の訪問でしたが、恐らく最後にもなります。
The school will be closed at the end of March.
3月末にこの学校は閉校になります。
I am very happy that I had a chance to meet these smiling students at their close-knit school, deep in the mountains of Ryōzen Town.
霊山町の山深い学校で、強い絆で微笑んでいる生徒達に会える機会があって、僕は本当に嬉しいです。
