On the morning of April 18th, I found myself walking on an expressway.
Yet there is no need to worry.
My stroll on a limited-access highway was part of a “pre-event” to commemorate the opening of the Sōma-Fukushima Expressway.
That walk began with a bus ride.
Just as our bus was pulling onto the expressway ramp, it stopped.
The doors opened, prompting us passengers to disembark and begin walking up onto the expressway.
I must admit, it was the first time I’d walked on the surface of an expressway in Japan.
I was surprised by how scenic it is.
Participants assembled near a tent set up on the surface of the expressway.
Being a “pre-event”, the beginning was marked with the popping of balloons.
After the balloons were burst, we set off on our walk.
We walked into the Kamihobara Tunnel.
It was the first time I had seen so many people walking through an expressway tunnel.
Because of the strong wind, we were not able to walk all the way through the tunnel.
Yet those who made it halfway through could stand on an Olympic-themed podium.
After turning around, we walked out of the tunnel.
Facing this direction, the beauty of the scenery became even more apparent.
The buses were waiting for us a few hundred meters later, and they deftly whisked us back to the parking lot.
I received a certificate of completion, as well as a number of other gifts to commemorate my adventure.
With the opening of this new expressway, it is my hope that all those passing by notice the rustic beauty of the Date Region.

The other day, I visited Hanamiyama.
Of course, the most famous Hanamiyama is in neighboring Fukushima City, but did you know that Date City also has a “Hanamiyama”?
I visited Hobara Town’s Tominari District to see Date City’s own Hanamiyama.
I was afraid that it would be hard to find, but thankfully it is right off Prefectural Route 318.
The park offers the opportunity to bask in the serene rural environment from inside a fluffy cloud of cherry blossoms.
There is even a square gazebo, making it a potential picnic paradise.
This park is also the starting point for climbing Mt. Amagoi.
I eagerly set off for the peak, thinking it would be an easy climb, perfectly suited to novice alpinists.
I was wrong.
Instead of the beautiful view of the Date region, I only saw that I was an inadequate mountaineer.
Nonetheless, I intend on returning someday, and on making it to the top.
・・・
On the way back to City Hall, I managed to find Oguni’s famous komahime-zakura cherry tree, which had eluded me the month prior.
I like to think that it was a sign that persistence pays off.
And I like to think that Tominari’s Hanimiyama and Mount Amagoi will be just as beautiful when I return, ready to reach the peak.
