Hobara Summer Festival ・ 保原サマーフェスティバル

I went to the Hobara Summer Festival!
It made me so happy that I could experience a summer festival despite arriving in Japan in Autumn. I was afraid I‘d arrived too late to experience any of them.​

保原サマーフェスティバルに行ってみました。秋に日本に到着しましたので、今年の祭りは見にいけないと思っていましたが、「夏祭り」に行けたのは嬉しかったです。

It was a lot colder than the name “Summer Festival” suggested, but the people gathered there were lively and gave it a very refreshing vibe, just like an average summer festival. It felt strange to see so many people gathered since the beginning of the corona pandemic.

すごく寒くて、天気的には「夏祭り」だと感じませんでしたが、集まった皆さんが爽やかで、本当の夏祭りのように賑やかな雰囲気を作れました。コロナが発生してからこんなに人が集まるのを見るのは不思議な感じでした。

There were a lot of food stalls to choose from and even a toy stand that was popular with the many children gathered. Among food, chocolate covered bananas seemed to be the kids’ favorite.  

屋台がもちろんたくさんありましたが、その中には、多くいた子供に人気なおもちゃ屋もありました。食べ物専門の屋台の中ではチョコバナナが一番子供に人気でした。

​​I love yakisoba and was determined to eat it so I hopped in line. The first shop I went to was sold out, but luckily there was another one selling it. All of the food stands had long lines. Everyone must have been excited to finally get to eat summer festival food again. It was definiTely worth the wait in line to eat yakisoba. 

焼きそばが大好きなので、「必ず食べる！」という気持ちで列に入りました。最初に行った屋台の焼きそばは売り切れてしまっていましたが、もう一つのお店では売っていました。すべての屋台の列は非常に長かったです。皆さんはきっと久しぶりにお祭りの食べ物を食べるのを楽しみにしていたのでしょう。思った通り、焼きそばを食べるために待った価値がありました。

The next stall over was selling ō​banyaki, a thick pancake-like pastry traditionally filled with red bean paste, or anko. 

隣の屋台は大判焼きを売っていました。

While waiting in line for yakisoba I stared at it so long I decided to try ō​banyaki for dessert. They were selling two types – custard-filled and anko-filled – so of course I chose both!

​​焼きそばの列に待ちながらずっと大判焼きの屋台をみてしまいましたので、結果的にデザートとして試してみようと決めました。カスタードと餡子の二種類が売っていましたので、当然両方を選びました。

At the same stall, I also bought a stick of tamakon, which are konjac balls soaked in hot broth. It was perfect for such a cold day. Eating the konjac balls with a dab of karashi mustard was even more delicious!

同じ屋台で玉コンも売っていましたので1本買いました。初めて玉コンを食べましたが、美味しくて寒い日にぴったりと思いました。玉コンをからしと食べるのが一番美味しいと感じました!

Night marked the beginning of the illumination display that runs from December to the end of January on Jinya Street. The trees lining both sides of the street were lit up beautifully.

夜の始まりは、陣屋通りにある12月から1月末まで続くイルミネーションの始まりとなりました。街路の両端に並んでいた木が美しく光っていました。

There was even a display of some cute penguins.

可愛いペンギンの展示もありました！

It was so cold that I went home and came back later for the illumination, but in the meantime, it seems I missed some of the more interesting staples of the festival like dances and taiko. I guess that just means that I’ll have to go back again next year! I am looking forward to it. I hope that the severity of the corona virus will calm down and next year it can be a proper “summer” festival!

寒さと雨により、途中で家に帰ってしまったため、保原サマーフェスティバルのダンスや太鼓を見られなかったようです。とても残念ですけど、来年行くしかありませんということになりました！とても楽しみにしています。コロナが落ち着いて、来年はちゃんと「サマー」フェスティバルになるように祈っています！
