旧保原町の絵図と地図・Maps and Illustrations of Former Hobara Town

The other day, Lara and I stopped by the Hobara History Museum to look at maps!
先日、僕とララは保原歴史文化資料館に地図を見に行きました!

Currently, the Hobara History Museum is hosting an exhibit entitled A Garnering of Original Documents ~ Looking Deeply into Maps and Illustrations of Former Hobara Town.
保原歴史文化資料館は今、「収蔵資料展～旧保原町の絵図・地図を読み解く～」を開催しています。

As we all know, old maps are interesting to look at, and old Japanese maps are no exception.
言うまでもなく、古い地図を見るのは面白くて、日本の古い地図もとっても面白いです。

This map was drawn up over 300 years ago.
この地図は300年前に描かれました。

As you can see, Japan's northeastern Tohoku region (in the upper-right corner) was not given much consideration.
ご覧の通り、東北地方は軽視されていたらしいです。

Modern cartography would not allow such treatment!
現代の地図学はそんな事を許さないでしょう!

The development of Japanese mapmaking can be seen in the exhibit.
この展示で、日本の地図作成の発展が見えます。

The below map was made in 1888.
下の地図は1888年に描かれました。

What year was the detailed topographic map below drafted in?
そして、下の綿密な地形図の作成はいつだったのでしょうか?

It was also made in 1888!
なんと、同じ1888年でした!

Yet, the focus of the exhibit is on maps of the Hobara of yesteryear.
しかし、この展示会の焦点は昔の保原の地図です。

Through the exhibit, I learned that what became the former Town of Hobara was an assortment of nineteen villages in the Edo Era.
資料によると、旧保原町は江戸時代に19の村に分かれていました。

Kamihobara was one such village.
上保原村はその一つでした。

It was interesting to see the development of Hobara from nineteen small villages, to a town, and finally Date City.
19村の組み合わせから町に、そして伊達市になるまでの保原の発展を見るのが面白かったです。

My interest was also piqued by illustrations of two historic temples dedicated to the Buddhist deity Kannon.
2か所の歴史的な観音堂の絵にも興味が湧きました。

Date City's Gurutto Passport ・ 伊達市ぐるっとパスポート

Whenever you are in Date City, be sure to carry your passport!
伊達市内にいる際、必ずパスポートを携行しましょう!

Your Date City Gurutto Passport!
すなわち、伊達市ぐるっとパスポートを!

If you have been in Date City anytime since September, you may have noticed these banners flying outside certain businesses.
もし9月以来伊達市にいらっしゃいましたら、こんなのぼりを見かけたかもしれません。

They indicate businesses participating in the Date City Gurutto Passport promotion, through which you can receive limited-edition Masamune Datenicle goods after collecting stamps in successive passports.
ステージアップ方式のパスポートでスタンプを集めて、「政宗ダテニクル」限定グッズがもらえる伊達市ぐるっとパスポートの加盟店を示しています。

The first step is to receive an introductory-level passport, either at Roadside Station Date-no-Sato RYŌZEN, or at any of the fifty participating businesses.
第一歩は道の駅「伊達の郷りょうぜん」、または50店舗の加盟店で「入門の書」を手に入れることです。

Lara and I visited the roadside station, where the details of the program were kindly explained to us.
ララと僕は道の駅に寄り、そこでイベントの詳細を説明して頂きました。

It wasn't long before Lara had completed her first passport!
いくばくもなく、ララは最初のパスポートを完了しました!

We brought her passport to the roadside station, where it was solemnly stamped in confirmation of its completion.
道の駅までパスポートをもって行き、完了の確認としてスタンプを押して頂きました。

Having progressed to the next stage, she received the "expert-level" passport, as well as a set of limited-edition Masamune Datenicle stickers.
ララは次のステージに進んだ上、「達人の書」のパスポートと政宗ダテニクル限定シールをもらいました。

I also presented my completed passport for stamping…
僕もスタンプをもらいに、完成したパスポートを提出して…

…and likewise received my stickers and second-stage passport.
…そしてシールと次のパスポートを頂きました。

As you might have noticed, there are two different sets of stickers. 
もしかして気がついた?シールは2種類もあります。

Which will you choose?
あなたはどちらかを選びますか?

Yet I was not content with just stickers; my ultimate goal was the final passport and lapel pin.
しかし、僕はシールだけで満足ではなかった。
最高のパスポートとピンバッジが僕の最終目的でした。

It took more than a month, but the long-awaited day finally arrived.
一ヶ月以上かかりましたが、その待望の日がやっと来ました。

Not only did I receive the final "discipline initiation" passport, but I had my choice of either a Masamune or Princess Megu lapel pin.
最高の「皆伝の書」の他にも、伊達政宗か愛姫かのピンバッジがいずれか頂けました。

Of course, I chose Princess Megu.
もちろん、僕は愛姫を選びました。

With her encouragement, I was eventually able to complete the final passport.
愛姫の応援もあり、ついに最高のパスポートを完成致しました。

The reward for those who have completed the final passport is a raffle ticket.
最高のパスポートを完成した人へのご褒美は抽選券です。

With this I could win a wonderful prize, like an assortment of Date City local specialties, or a year-long Roadside Station restaurant voucher.
これで「伊達市特産品詰合せ」や「道の駅レストラン年間食事券」の素晴らしい景品が当たります。

Swelling with hope, I entered my ticket into the raffle.
当選の希望に胸を膨らませて、抽選に応募しました。

I hope that I win something!
当たるように願っております!

Even if I don't, participating in this program has provided me with the impetus to visit various businesses within Date City, which has been a valuable experience.
当たらなくても、この事業の参加が伊達市内の色々なお店に寄るきかっけになって、貴重な経験でした。

So everyone, grab your passports and start getting stamped!
それでは皆さん、パスポートを手に入れて、スタンプをもらいましょう!
