December's English Experience ・ 12月の英語体験

At the end of the year, the holiday season tends to cast its joyous shadow over events held in December; and just like all things entertaining, English Experiences have a Christmas Special.
12月には、クリスマスがテーマの行事が多いです。英語体験もクリスマスの特別版があります。

But unlike most Christmas Specials, ours began with Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.
しかし、普通のクリスマスの行事と違って、この英語体験は頭・肩・膝・爪先の歌と踊りで始まりました。

As always, it was followed by the game Simon Says, and Simon’s stricter incarnation as Oni-Sensei.
いつも通り、次は「船長さんの命令ゲーム」とより厳しい鬼先生との活動でした。

During the next activity (Zookeeper Says), the children were instructed to “fly like a reindeer” and “stomp like Santa”.
次の活動は「動物園長さんの命令ゲーム」で、子ども達は「トナカイのようにとぶ」と「サンタのように足踏み」をしました。

Thankfully, no one asked why Santa was being kept in a zoo: for I had no answer.
何でサンタさんが動物園にいたのか、僕にもわかりません。幸い、子ども達はその理由を聞きませんでした。

After a shark-infested recitation of the song BINGO… 
サメが登場する「ビンゴ」の歌の後は…

…I read a storybook to the children.
英語の絵本の読み聞かせでした。

The book featured a little girl who sometimes behaves well, and sometimes badly.
絵本の主人公である少女はいい子ですが、時々わるい子の時もあります。

Which prompted me to ask the children, “If you behave well all year, who visits your home on Christmas Eve?”
そこで僕は子ども達に聞きました。
「一年間、いい子にしていたら、クリスマスイブの夜に誰が来るの?」

Of course, the children knew the answer, who was also introduced as the protagonist of the day’s game: Santa the Reindeer Rancher.
もちろん、子ども達は知っていました。そしてその人物はその日のゲームにも登場しました。

The premise of this game is that Santa (your correspondent) needs to rustle up a team of reindeer (the children) to pull his sled.
このゲームでは、サンタさん(僕)はそりを引いてくれるトナカイ(子ども達)を捕まえなければなりません。

However, this is hampered by Santa’s inability to see through the hat that has been pulled over his eyes.
しかし、サンタさんの帽子が目を隠しているので、前が見えません。

In order to find the reindeer, he calls out to them with the first half of the traditional Christmas greeting:
サンタさんはトナカイを見つける方法として、クリスマスの挨拶を利用します。

“Merry ….
サンタさんが「メリー」と呼ぶと…

To which the children reply, “… Christmas!”
子ども達は「クリスマス！」と答えます。

Altogether, it is similar to the traditional children’s game Marco Polo.
ことごとく、「目隠し鬼」と似ているゲームです。

However, a major difference lies in the setting: whereas Marco Polo is played in a swimming pool, this game was played in the expansive playroom.
米国では、「目隠し鬼」はプールで行いますが、このゲームは大きな遊戯室で行いましました。

Possibly due to the size of the playroom, Santa was unable to catch any reindeer on this day.
もしかして遊戯室の大きさのせいかもしれませんが、この日のサンタさんはトナカイを一匹も捕まえられませんでした。

Not for a lack of effort: even when temporarily blinded, chasing after twenty children is a lot of work.
努力が不足していたわけではありません。目隠しして20人の子ども達を追いかけるのは大変な運動なのです。

Despite the physical exercise I receive through these English experiences, a review of the day’s photos suggests that I may be developing a physique similar to that of Santa Clause. 
英語体験でよく運動しているのに、写真を確認すると、僕はどんどんサンタさんのような体格になってきているような気がします。

Thankfully, just as with the North Pole’s most famous resident, children are delighted with the presents I provide; and this day was no exception. 
それに、サンタさんのように、僕が配るプレゼントは子ども達に喜んでもらえているようです。この日も例外ではありませんでした。
