January's English Experience ・ 1月の英語体験

In the beginning of the year, Date City’s children used English to play a traditional New Year’s game.
年の始めの月に、伊達市の子ども達は正月の伝統的な遊びを英語で楽しみました。

Greetings take on a particular importance at the beginning of the year in Japan, a country that values such formalities.
日本では挨拶が大切にされていて、新年の挨拶は特に大事です。

Indeed, the beginning of every class throughout the year involves greeting and bowing to the teacher.
実際は、年の始めだけではなく、授業の始めにも生徒は先生へのお辞儀で挨拶をします。

Yet these English Experiences dispense with the bowing, and instead invariably begin with Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.
しかし、この英語体験ではお辞儀ではなく、頭・肩・膝・爪先の歌と踊りで始まります。

Which, on this day, was followed by the appearances of Simon and Oni-sensei.
この日はそのあと「船長さんの命令ゲーム」で船長さんと鬼先生が登場しました。

The next activity was singing the classic children’s song Bingo.
次の活動は伝統的な童謡の「ビンゴ」を歌う事でした。

After the shark had had his fill, a queasily familiar mouse was drawn, and offered to the farmer. 
登場するサメが満腹になった後、農家さんのためにおなじみのネズミが描かれました。

Then it was story time.
その後、絵本の読み聞かせの時間になりました。

This month’s storybook featured a variety of animals and their natural habitats. 
今月の絵本では色んな動物が登場します。

So it was only natural that the day’s game should also involve diverse animals.
そのため、その日のゲームにも色んな動物が登場しました。

The children made pairs, and each received a set of six cards with original animal illustrations. 
子ども達は2人組になり、各組は動物の絵が描かれたカードを6枚もらいました。

The animals were the same as the children encountered in July’s English Experience (though that month featured far cruder drawings).
この動物は7月の英語体験にも登場しました。(しかし、今月の絵の方がきれいでした。)

In pairs, the children played the Japanese card game karuta, and attempted to quickly snatch the illustration of the animal I had just named aloud.
子ども達は2人組で伝統的な遊びのカルタをし、僕が言った動物を素早く取るようにしました。

Though the children differed in the number of cards they were able to grab, in the end they all received one present.
子どもたちそれぞれ取れた枚数は異なりましたが、最後はみんな平等に一人一枚のプレゼントをもらいました。
