Date City’s Easter Egg Hunt ・ 伊達市のイースターエッグハント

On the morning of Pentecost Sunday, the last day of the Easter season, plastic eggs could be found strewn across Hobara Total Park.
復活節の最後の日である聖霊降臨の日曜日の朝、保原総合公園にプラスチック製のたまごが公園のあちらこちらに散りばめられ隠されました。

The guilty parties included yours truly; for Date City’s Civic Collaboration Department was hosting its second annual Easter egg hunt. 
たまごを隠した犯人たちの中には僕もいました。そうです、伊達市協働まちづくり課は第二回イースターエッグハントを開催しました！

Thankfully, many of the city’s children came by to help us pick those eggs up.
幸いなことに、伊達市の多くの子ども達がたまごを拾いに来てくれました。

Actually, we were hoping they would find all of them for us; so after everyone had arriven, I took the liberty of surmounting a boulder and explaining the egg-hunting procedure to those assembled below.
すべてを拾ってくれることを願っていましたので、参加者が集まってから、僕は岩に登り、たまご探しの方法を説明しました。

I think everyone understood.
皆さん、理解してくれた、と思います！

Explanation ended, we let the children loose.
説明し終わってから、子ども達を解放しました。

 The hunt had commenced.
イースターエッグハント開始です！

Wiley rabbits that we were, we had hid the eggs in dastardly difficult locations.
僕達はいたずら好きなイースターバニーで、たまごを大変見つけにくい所に隠しました。

Yet even our most ruthless antics were easily seen through by the children of Date.
しかし、どんないたずらをしても、子ども達は簡単に見破りました。

Even the tiniest of the city’s children being exceptionally clever, they had soon found more eggs than they could count.
小さな子供たちもお利口さんなので、数えきれないほどのたまごをすぐ見つけました。

Once they had found an egg, the children had been instructed to deliver it directly to us, in exchange for a reward.
たまごを見つけて、直接僕達に届けたらご褒美をもらえる、と子ども達に伝いえていました。

But nay would we relinquish our prizes so easily; the children were first challenged with a question in English, appropriate to their age. 
しかし、簡単に賞品を譲るつもりはありません。私達は、子ども達に年齢に合わせた英語の問題をだしました。

They had to give the English name of the fruit, animal, or school subject depicted in an illustration enclosed within the plastic egg they’d found.
見つけたたまごの中に、果実・動物・学校の科目の絵が描いてある紙が入っていて、その英語名を言わなければなりませんでした。

Treats, stickers, and ample praise awaited those who answered correctly (which was everyone).
ご褒美のお菓子、シールと、賞賛たっぷり！を、正しく答えた子ども(つまり、全員)に与えました。

As for we egg-layers, a frantic search for the few remaining eggs awaited us at the end of the event. 
たまごを隠した僕達は、行事が終わると残っているたまごの捜索を始めました。

We recovered nearly all of them; as for the rest, we can only hope that they will hatch and grow up into friendly, fuzzy Easter bunnies by the time of next year’s egg hunt.
ほとんどのたまごを回収することができました。見つけることができなかった、その残りは、来年のエッグハントまでに無事に孵って、フレンドリーでもふもふなイースターバニーに成長することを祈るばかりです。
