Manually Pollinating a Peach Orchard・桃畑の人工授粉

This year, not only did ornamental cherry trees bloom early, but their hard-working peach cousins did as well.
今年は桜だけではなく、果実を作ってくれる桃の木も早く花を咲かせました。

Which, in the Date Region, meant that hard work was waiting for fruit growers earlier than most years.
その結果、伊達地方では果実を作ってくれる果樹農家さんに大変な仕事が例年より早くやってきました。

Although the world’s orchardists usually rely on insects such as bees to perform pollination, the Date Region’s peach growers take matters into their own hands.
海外の果樹栽培者は一般的に受粉をミツバチなどの虫に任せますが、伊達地方の桃栽培者は自分の手を使って、「授粉」をします。

Yes, the orchards that produce the world’s finest peaches are pollinated manually.
つまり、世界一美味しい桃は、人工授粉の結果なのです。

As in, human-ually; no insects are involved.
人工的な授粉ですので、虫は一度も関わりません。

In fact, despite seeing thousands upon thousands of pink peach blossoms while covering this story, I didn’t notice a single bee. 
実際、今回の取材で桃の花を何万個見ましたが、ミツバチさんは一匹も見かけませんでした。

And as the kind grower who guided us through the process remarked, even if there were swarms of bees buzzing about, he wouldn’t trust them -- and would perform artificial pollination, just in case. 
そして親切に案内してくれた桃栽培者さんの説明によると、ミツバチの群れがやってきても、あてにせず、念のために自分で人工授粉を行います。

The first step towards manual pollination is collecting unopened buds from the trees, to extract their pollen.
人工授粉の第一歩はまだ開いていない蕾を取り集め、中の花粉を抜き出します。

We weren’t at the orchard to witness this step, but the grower we spoke to says he generally collects 20 kilograms (or around 44 pounds) of buds.
この作業を行っていた時には僕達は果樹園にいませんでしたが、栽培者さんによると普段は蕾を20キロほど集めるそうです。

Neither buds nor flowers are very heavy, so I can only imagine that this is a time-consuming step.
蕾でも花でもあまり重くはないのですが、かなり時間がかかることは想像できます。

These buds are brought to the local agricultural cooperative for processing, and the resulting powder is placed inside this hand-powered device.
蕾を農協に持って行って、処理してもらってから、やってきた粉をこの機械に入れます。

As even 20 kg does not create enough working material, the pollen is augmented with lycopodium powder (derived from the spores of Lycopodium clavatum, a quite different plant).
蕾は20キロあっても、十分な原料にならないので、「石松子」という植物由来の粉で補充します。

The bold pink mixture is then poured into the hopper of an electric pollination wand.
この桃色の粉を花粉交配機の容器に入れます。

Hopper full, it was time to pollinate.
容器が満タンで、授粉の時間になりました。

Lara had the first go, while I looked on enviously. 
ララは先で、僕はうらやましく見ました。

Yet good things come to wait; and when it was finally my turn, I found that pollination was fun.
しかし、果報は寝て待て、僕の番になると、授粉が楽しいとわかりました。

Very fun.
とても楽しい。

Actually, I could do it all day.
本当に、一日中できそうです。

Without a doubt, it was worth the 30-some-year wait.
間違いなく、授粉体験を三十数年待った甲斐がありました。

As a happy surprise, I found that the same 185 centimeters of height that has brought about many a painful rendezvous between my head and the door frames of traditional homes, also allows me to reach and pollinate the top branches of a tree easily.
もう一つの嬉しい事として、和風の家で支障になる185センチもある僕の身長は、果樹の上の枝の授粉作業に有利になることがわかりました。

Indeed, no blossom could escape my reach.
まさに、果樹のどの花も、僕ならば高嶺の花はありませんでした。

I can only hope that they will reciprocate the effort and bear beautiful, delicious fruit. 
果樹の花は僕の努力に応えて、美しく美味しい果実に実ってくれると願っています。

In the meantime, I am anxiously awaiting another opportunity to pollinate peach trees.
そしてその間、次の桃の木に授粉する機会を待ち望みます。

Due to the nature of flowering plants, that would likely be next spring, at the earliest.
被子植物の性質のため、早くても来年の春になるでしょうか。

Cherry Blossoms at the Schools of Yesteryear ・ 旧校舎の満開桜

This year cherry blossoms came into bloom earlier than usual, and at many schools in the region, this coincided perfectly with school entrance ceremonies. 
今年は例年より早く桜が咲き、この地方の多くの学校では入学式の時期に重なりました。

​

Indeed, school campuses in Japan often boast a copious number of blossoming cherry trees; and while some of us may have reservations about leisurely enjoying the scenery of a school that is in session, there is no such worry at schools that have been closed.
日本の校庭には、立派な桜の木がたくさんあります。生徒がいる学校ではのんびり花見をすることを遠慮する方々が多いと思いますが、閉校された学校ならばそんな心配はありません。

​

After first coming to Japan, I taught for five years at four elementary schools (as well as a middle school). During this time I developed a fondness for the design of school buildings built decades ago, characterized by their two or three stories of thick reinforced concrete, with full-length balconies and a detached gymnasium.
僕は初めての来日から5年間、4ヶ所の小学校(と中学校1ヶ所)で教えました。その間、数十年前に建てられた、長いバルコニーがある2階または3階建ての鉄筋コンクリートの校舎の姿と、そこから少し離れて建つ体育館の姿が好きになりました。​

(In fact, I was inside such an elementary school building when the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake struck, and greatly appreciated its robust construction.)
（実は東日本大震災発生時、僕はその小学校の校舎の中にいて、校舎が頑丈だったことをとてもありがたく感じました。）​

So when the cherry blossoms came into bloom this year, I took the opportunity to photograph these classic buildings while they were adorned with pink petals.
こうして今年、桜が満開の時に、桜の花びらで彩られた懐かしい校庭の写真を撮る機会をえることがきました。​

DAY 1 ・ 一日目​

I started by making a round of the closed elementary schools in the former town of Yanagawa.
まずは、旧梁川町の閉校になった小学校をまわりました。​

My first stop was Ōeda Elementary School, near Date City’s border with the town of Kunimi.
はじめに国見町との町境近くにある大枝小学校に行きました。​

​

(Actually, for many years this school was operated jointly with Kunimi Town.)
（この学校は長い間、国見町との合同運営でした。）​

The number of large cherry trees was slightly less than I had envisioned.
大きな桜の木が、思い描いていたより少なかったです。​

Which is to say, I had envisioned more than one.
つまり、僕は一本以上あると予想していました。​

Nonetheless, I enjoyed the sight of that tree.
それにもかかわらず、その一本の美しさに私は目を奪われました。​

However, I do realize that one tree might not compleTely satisfy blossom-seeking visitors to the Ōeda community; to such tourists I suggest surmounting the site of the former Ōeda castle.
確かに、花見のために大枝集落を訪れた方には、この一本の桜では物足りない可能性があると思います。そんな訪問者には、大枝城跡をお勧めします。​

​

This mound is topped with a thick planting of cherry trees; when they come into bloom, the site can be easily spotted from wide areas of northern Yanagawa.
この城跡の丘の上には、桜が密に植えられていて花が咲くと梁川北部のあちこちから見えます。​

I next headed to Isazawa Elementary School.
次に向かったのは五十沢小学校です。​

There were many more cherry trees here, as well as a few children, playing together during their spring vacation.
ここは桜の木が多く、春休み中の遊んでいる子ども達もいました。

The large trees standing along the edge of the playfield had begun to slowly shed their blossoms onto the ground below; the silence of this floral snowfall was only periodically broken by the laughter of children, and the distant whistle of the steam locomotive at Yanagawa Kibō-no-Mori Park.
校庭の縁に立っていた桜の大木は、雪が舞うように静かに花びらを落としていていました。静寂を破るのは、子ども達の笑い声とやながわ希望の森公園のSLの汽笛だけでした。

As introspective a time as I was having, I had more schools to visit. 
内省的なひと時でしたが、僕にはまだまだ訪問する学校がありました。

Tearing myself away from the Isazawa area, I drove along and crossed the Abukuma River, before following the Yamafunyū River to the site of Yamafunyū Elementary School. 
五十沢地域を去り、阿武隈川沿いを運転し、川を渡り、そして山舟生川沿いを通って山舟生小学校に着きました。

Not all of the trees on this campus were still alive, but the few that were bloomed in a soft pink that contrasted beautifully with the green shades of the mountain forest.
ここではすべての桜の木が花を咲かせているわけではありませんでしたが、その中のいくつかの木は柔らかな桜色の花を咲かせ、山の緑と美しく対比していました。​

Plunging deeper into the mountains, I threaded through a string of narrow roads, past countless fields and farmhouses, before finally arriving in front of Shirane Elementary School.
そしてそこからより山深く入り、数多くの畑や農家の間を通り過ぎ、狭く細い道をくぐり抜けた後、ようやく白根小学校に着きました。​

I liked the extended roof ridge, reminiscent of a Shinto shrine. 
神社を連想させる、伸びやかな屋根の棟が特に好きでした。​

As for cherry blossoms, I found that most were hiding behind the rustic gymnasium.
桜の木は、というと、ほとんどは体育館の裏にありました。​

I drove out of the mountains and towards the Abukuma River to reach the day’s final destination, Tomino Elementary School.
山を出て再び阿武隈川に向かい、この日最後の行き先の富野小学校に到着しました。​

A road lined with cherry trees encircles the campus, and on this day surrounded the school and kindergarten in a fluffy fence of pink.
道に沿った桜の木が小学校と幼稚園を囲み、この日、桜色のふわふわな垣根になっていました。​

DAY 2 ・ 二日目

My first stop on my second day was Ōishi Elementary School, which I had been able to visit in February 2021, shortly before it was closed.
二日目の最初の目的地は大石小学校でした。私は閉校の直前、2021年の2月に訪問したことがありました。

Having not been since then, I was worried that I would be unable to find the school; thankfully, its location is betrayed by the large cherry trees that stand on the site beside Prefectural Route 31.
その時以来行ったことはなかったので、見つけられないかもと心配しました。しかし、県道31号線沿いの校庭の大きな桜の木が、校舎の位置を知らせてくれました。​

Large flowering cherry trees crowd the otherwise empty campus, offering a photographic playground for anyone carrying a camera.
無人の校庭には大きな桜の木がたくさんありますので、カメラを持っている人にとっては楽園です。​

I stayed within the former town of Ryōzen to visit the next former school, Ishida Elementary.
次に旧霊山町にある、石田小学校に向かいました。​

It had just barely qualified for a visit on this excursion, having been closed only the month prior.
先月閉校したばかりなので、この取材にギリギリ該当しました。

The western side of the campus is lined with numerous cherry trees.
学校の西側にたくさんの桜の木が並んでいます。

Although I found fewer trees there, the school’s eastern edge, with access to the Ishida River, also struck my fancy.
桜の木は少ないですが、石田川沿いの東側の桜が心に残りました。​

Hitting the road again, I continued heading south to the former town of Tsukidate, and to what was once Date City’s southernmost school of Ote Elementary.
旅は続き、旧月舘町に向って南へ、以前伊達市の最南端の学校だった小手小学校に行きました。

When its many large cherry trees break into bloom, the school campus is conspicuous even from a distance.
桜の大木にたくさんの花が咲き誇ると、遠くからもこの学校が目立ちます。

To my delight, I found the school surrounded by peach orchards, which this year have unusually chosen to flower concurrently with their cherry cousins.
嬉しいことに学校の周りの桃畑も例年より早く咲き、桜と同時に見ることができました。​

With the many flowering trees, I suggest a spring visit to this school; but thanks to the magnificent view of nearby Mt. Megami, it is beautiful any time of year.
まわりに花の木が多いので、この学校には春の訪問がおすすめですが、近くに女神山の壮大な景色があるので一年中いつでも美しい風景です。​

The final stop on my tour of former schools was Tominari Elementary, in mountainous southern Hobara.
取材の終着点は、山が多い南保原の富成小学校でした。​

As it had been a windy day, by the time I arrived the trees had already sustained heavy losses to their blossom population.
その日は風が強かったので、僕が着いた時点で桜の木はすでに多くの花を落としていました。​

Nonetheless, the campus still held a whimsical charm with the remaining flowers.
それにもかかわらず、残っていた花だけで何とも言えない魅力的な風景でした。​

I particularly liked the statue of young boy engrossed in a book, despite the burden of firewood he carries on his back.
重い薪を運んでいるにもかかわらず、読書を楽しんでいる少年の像が特に好きでした。​

Heading back to City Hall, I was happy that I had been able to visit all nine of these former schools while their cherry trees were still in bloom.
市役所に戻る時、桜が咲いている間にこの9ヵ所の旧学校に行けて嬉しいと感じました。

I also realized that one of the best parts of this excursion had been the driving between schools; I had found blossoming cherry trees popping up across the landscape, making Date City particularly beautiful at this time of year.
また、学校から学校までの旅がこの取材の楽しい一部だったことに気が付きました。車からあちこちに咲いている桜を見ることができる伊達市の風景は、この時期特に美しいからです。

Whether you are an alumnus of one of these schools, or merely passing through the countryside of Date City in early spring, I hope that you, too, will be able to enjoy the sight of these former sites of education while the trees are still pink.
これらの学校の卒業生も、早春の伊達市の田園地帯をただ通り過ぎる方も、愛読者の皆さんも、かつての校舎の木々が桜色に染まる風景を楽しむことができたことを願っています。​
