Good-bye, Date City・さようなら、伊達市

August 2023 marks the end of my five-year term as a Date City Coordinator for International Relations.
2023年8月に僕の伊達市国際交流員としての5年間の任期が終わります。

Accordingly, this month’s CIR Update will be the last written by me.
したがって、今月の国際交流員日記は僕が書いた最後の記事となります。

I would like to sincerely thank all those who have kindly read my posts here over the past five years.
この5年間、僕の記事を読んでくださった愛読者の皆さんに心から感謝したいです。

Looking back on these posts, it is interesting to see how the Date City, and the world at large, has changed.
これまでの投稿を振り返ると、伊達市や世界がどう変化したのかが見えて興味深いです。

Researching and writing these posts has also effected change in your correspondent.
これらの記事のための取材や執筆は僕にも変化をもたらしました。

Through this work, I have developed a deeper understanding of region that I resolved to take on as my home more than a decade ago.
この仕事を通して、10年前に僕の故郷にすると決心したこの地域について、より深く理解できるようになりました。

Regarding another inexplicable decision, creating these posts has provided me with the first enticing peeks down the lifelong path that I have stubbornly chosen to follow: that of the commercial orchardist.
もう一つ、皆さんには理解されにくいかもしれませんが、これらの記事を作成することで、僕が頑として辿ると決めた魅力的な生涯の道を経験することができました。それは、果樹農家の道です。

But perhaps most importantly, writing professionally over the past five years has given me the confidence to write at home as well; and what I lack in ability, I can now certainly make up in arrogance.
しかし、最も重要なことは、この5年間、仕事として執筆したことで、仕事外でも執筆する自信を僕に与えてくれたことです。欠けている文章力は、僕の自信過剰で補えるでしょう。

So whether you are opening a can of inexpensive peach juice, or a difficult-to-read book by an obscure and impoverished author, it is possible that our paths may collide again in the future, though be it just slightly.
そうなると、安価な桃のジュースの缶を開けたり、無名の貧乏作家の読みづらい小説のページを開いたりした時、またいつか僕と愛読者の皆さんが再び少しでも触れ合う可能性があるかもしれません。

Of course, if you visit the neighboring town of Koori, you might actually run into me. 
もちろん、隣の桑折町に行くと、僕と実際に出くわすかもしれません。
