Halloween Events・ハロウィンの活動

October is the month of my (Lara) favorite holiday-- Halloween! As such, I was very happy that we were lucky enough to participate in two Halloween-related events this year. 
今月は私（ララ）の一番好きなホリデーの月です！そのホリデーはハロウィンです！今年はハロウィンの2つのイベントに参加させていただけましたので、とても嬉しいです。

The first was an event held in the Isazawa Region Community Center. 
第一のイベントは「ハロウィンかぼちゃ作り」です。五十沢地区交流館で開催しました。

The head of the Center had grown pumpkins for this event, just to give the participants a go at carving them. 
イベントの参加者が「ジャック・オー・ランタン（かぼちゃのランタン）」を作ることができるように、佐藤館長自ら、このイベントのためにかぼちゃを育てました。

We started the event with a presentation made by Cameron and me, which included a fun quiz, the history behind Halloween, and a look into the plethora of ways that it is celebrated present-day!
まず最初に、私とキャメロンが作ったプレゼンテーションの発表で始まりました。その中で楽しいクイズ、ハロウィンの歴史や現在ある様々なハロウィンの祝い方などを紹介しました。

The participants were very interactive and even asked many questions at the end. 
参加された方々は非常に関心を持って聞いてくださり、最後に多くの質問もしていただきました。

Afterwards, everyone was given their own small pumpkin to carve. Everyone chose their own design, ranging from a traditional jack-o-lantern face to popular characters like Hello Kitty. Despite it being their first time, everyone was already carving like an expert! 
その後、参加者の皆さんは小さい方のかぼちゃをもらいました。伝統的なジャック・オー・ランタンの顔やキティちゃんなど、それぞれが様々なデザインを考えて作りました。初めてにもかかわらず、皆さんが熟練者のように彫りました。

Cameron and I were also given the opportunity to show off our pumpkin-carving skills, gained through years of experience, on one of the bigger pumpkins. It of course required a big knife. (Only pumpkins were harmed in the making of this jack-o-lantern.) 
私たちも、何十年間の経験で得た、かぼちゃ彫りのスキルを大きめのかぼちゃで見せる機会をいただきました。もちろん、大きい包丁が必要でした。（※被害を受けたのはかぼちゃだけでした。）

We had a time-constraint so we went for a more basic design, but I’m fond of how it turned out. It was my first time collaborating with someone on a pumpkin, so it was a fun experience!  
時間が少なかったため、ベーシックなデザインを選びましたが、私たちが作ったかぼちゃを気に入っています。今回かぼちゃ彫りを初めて共同で他の人と一緒に作りましたが、楽しかったです！

After everyone finished up their carving, we ended the event by giving them an opportunity to trick-or-treat. The head of the Center had drawn a door on a blackboard that Cameron and I stood behind. The participants walked up one by one, knocked, and said “Trick or Treat!” Then, either Cameron or I popped out to hand out the treat bags that had kindly been prepared in advance.
皆さんが彫り終わって、最後に「トリック・オア・トリート！」をする機会をつくりました。館長が黒板に描いたドアの絵の後ろに、私とキャメロンが立ちました。参加者一人ずつがドアをノックし、「トリック・オア・トリート」を言ったら、私かキャメロンが出て、事前に用意していたお菓子をあげました。

Before the participants left, they were given a large pumpkin each, to try to carve at home. 
終了前、参加者の各家族に、家でゆっくり彫れるように大きめのかぼちゃをもう一つ配りました。

Everyone, including the participants, staff and of course us CIRs enjoyed the event, so it seems like they may try to hold it again next year! Please be sure to come join us in a fun Halloween tradition.  
参加者、スタッフや私たち国際交流員がとても楽しむことができましたので、また来年も開催するそうです！ぜひ機会があれば、一緒にハロウィンの習慣を楽しみに来てください！

 Our second event was an event I had held for the first time last year— Handmade Halloween. 
ハロウィンの第二のイベントは、私が去年初めて企画し開催したイベントです。それは「ハンドメイドハロウィン」です！

This event, open for preschoolers and their parents, aimed to teach simple Halloween-related English in a fun way! 
「ハンドメイドハロウィン」は、ハロウィンについての簡単な英語を学べる、未就学児とその保護者が参加できるイベントです。

Held in Smile Park Hobara, we started the event with a simple play using the paper crafts I made. In this play, a bad guy steals all of Date City’s candy, ruining Halloween!-- that is, until Pumpkin, his friends, and the kids of Date defeat him through the power of English.
今年はスマイルパーク保原で開催しました。はじめに、私が事前に作ったペーパークラフトを使った劇を披露しました。その劇の中では、悪い人が伊達市のキャンディーの全てを奪い、ハロウィンは台無しになりそうです。しかしパンプキンくんとパンプキンくんの友達（バッド、ゴースト、マミィ、ウィッチ）と参加した子どもたちが英語を発音する力で悪い人を倒して、今年のハロウィンを救うことができました！

After kindly listening and participating in our play, the kids chose their favorite design and put their own adorable twist on them. 
私たちの劇を見て、英語を上手に発音した子どもたちは、パンプキンくんやその友達のどれか、好きなデザインを選んで、作りました。

I feel reassured knowing that no bad guy will try to take away their candy with their new “protection” crafts at their side! 
皆さんが作ったペーパークラフトがお守りになって、悪い人が皆さんのキャンディーを奪うことはないでしょう！
