Christmas Boots Unveiling・巨大クリスマスブーツオブジェお披露目式

At the end of November Lara and I (Cameron) had the opportunity to assist with the setup and unveiling of the Christmas Boots being displayed in Hobara.

11 月末、ララと僕（キャメロン）は保原中央交流館前で行われた、草津市から寄贈された巨大クリスマスブーツオブジェのお披露目式と、小さなクリスマスブーツを飾るお手伝いをしました。

Our participation in this event was over two days, the day of the event and the day prior. For the day prior to the event, we were tasked with hanging up small Christmas boots inside the Chinchin train. Each of these Christmas boots were made by Hobara Elementary School third graders, totaling roughly 80 boots. The boots displayed each child’s enthusiasm for, and enjoyment of the project and therefore we handled them with care as we hung them up via string inside the train. 

僕たちがこのイベントに参加したのは、イベント前日と当日の2日間です。
イベント前日は、チンチン電車の車内に小さなクリスマスブーツを吊るす仕事をしました。このクリスマスブーツは保原小学校の3年生の生徒たちが作ったもので、総数約80個です。生徒たちが頑張って作ったブーツだったので、僕たちは丁寧にヒモで吊るしていきました。

UnfortunaTely for me, arts and crafts and similar activities so I struggled to hang them up via tying the string into a knot. I think Lara had hung up seven or so before I managed to hang one up by sheer luck. FortunaTely for me, however, I did receive further training from Lara that allowed me to improve my skills greatly. While my consistency and speed did improve, I would venture to say that Lara still hung up 70% of the boots herself and for that I am grateful. 

残念ながら、僕はこのようなことに不器用で、吊るすのに苦労しました。ララが7つほど吊るしたら、僕は1つしか吊るすことがでませんでした。しかし幸いなことに、僕はララにコツを教えてもらい、スキルアップしました。吊るすスピードは向上しましたが、おそらくララがブーツの7割を吊るしたと思います。

Starting on December 11th, these boots will be displayed on the first floor lobby of the Hobara Central Exchange Hall. Be sure to check them out!

Our other task during this event was on the day of the unveiling. We ventured over to Hobara Elementary School in order to help chaperone the children in the choir club on their way to, and at the Hobara Central Exchange Hall. The choir club was to sing a few songs following the unveiling of the lights on Jinya Street and the large Christmas boot found in front of the Central Exchange Hall. 

このイベントのもうひとつの仕事は、イベント当日、保原小学校合唱部の子どもたち(約30人)が小学校から保原中央交流会館に到着するまでの付き添いでした。合唱部は、陣屋通りのイルミネーション点灯式と巨大クリスマスブーツのお披露目式に続いて、数曲歌うことになっていました。

Before the event, the children practiced their singing and following that, they were given some recreational time. This was what we were in charge of so we had prepared two games for the children to enjoy. 

イベントの前に、子どもたちは先生と歌の練習をし、その後、レクリエーションの時間がありました。これは僕たちの担当だったので、子どもたちが楽しめるように2つのゲームを用意しました。

The first game we played was one we have not tried out yet before, called “apple pie.” In this game, one person is selected out of a group and has to face away from the rest of the group. Then another person is selected to say “apple pie!” in any way they like. Then the student who was selected first has to guess who said “apple pie.” As far as depth or rules go, the game is fairly basic so we were a little worried it might not be as enjoyable for the children. FortunaTely the children had a great time playing it and were sad when we decided to switch to our other prepared game. 

最初のゲームは、私たちにとっても初めての試みの「アップルパイ」というゲームでした。このゲームは、まず子どもたちの中から一人が選ばれ、その他の子どもたちから顔をそむけます。次に別のもう一人が選ばれ、自由に好きな声で「アップルパイ！」と言って、顔をそむけていた子どもが、誰が「アップルパイ！」と言ったかを当てます。ルールが簡単なので、子どもたちが楽しめるかどうか少し心配しましたが、とても楽しんでくれました。

The other game we had prepared was one we have played with students many times before and is always a hit—the true or false game. 

もうひとつ用意したゲームは、これまで何度も生徒たちとやったことがあり、いつも大好評の「〇×ゲーム」です。

In this game we give a statement and have the children decide whether that statement is true or false. One wall of the room is where the children who think the statement is true should run to, and the opposite wall is for those who think it is false. A game where the participants can move their body, make guesses, and discuss with their friends is always a fun time and even the other teachers participated!

このゲームは、僕たちがある文章を言って、それが本当か嘘かを判断するゲームです。部屋の一方の壁には、「本当」だと思う子どもたちが行き、反対側の壁には、「嘘」だと思う子どもたちが行きます。子供たちが体を動かしたり、推測したり、友達と話し合ったりできるゲームです。このゲームには先生たちも参加していただきました！

The statements we gave were about ourselves and our culture, ranging from where in Japan we used to live, when we started studying Japanese, what Americans eat on Christmas, and many more. The children enjoyed running back and forth deciding between true or false, and would ask us follow up questions after the answers were revealed. 

また、僕たちが以前日本のどこに住んでいたか、いつ日本語を勉強し始めたか、アメリカ人はクリスマスに何を食べるかなど、自分自身やアメリカの文化について伝えました。子供たちからは、それに対していろいろと質問をしてもらいました。
Following the games came the main event, the illumination of Jinya Street and the large Christmas boot. Each child sang with Santa hats on and afterward we escorted them back into the Central Exchange Hall where we passed out snacks to each child.

ゲームの後、メインイベントの陣屋通りのイルミネーション点灯式、巨大クリスマスブーツのお披露目式に参加しました。子どもたちはサンタの帽子を被って、クリスマスソングなどを歌いました。その後、僕たちは子どもたちを保原中央交流館のホールに案内し、お菓子を子どもたちに配りました。

I am glad to be able to have helped out during this event and meet many students at Hobara Elementary School for the first time and hope to see them again!

このイベントのお手伝いができたこと、そして保原小学校の合唱部の子どもたちと交流できて、楽しかったです！また皆さんに会えたらうれしいです！
