Ａ Day at Tsukidate Academy・月舘学園での活動

Each week Lara spends a day at Tsukidate Academy, participating in some of their English classes. I (Cameron) accompany her at least once a month, and sometimes more often if my schedule permits. It is a refreshing change of pace in the work week to spend a day at school and I always look forward to seeing the smiling faces of the students. 

毎週ララは月舘学園で1日を過ごし、英語の授業に参加しています。僕は少なくとも月に1回、スケジュールが合えばそれ以上の頻度で同行します。月舘学園に行ける日は気分転換になるし、生徒たちの笑顔を見るのが楽しみです。

While Lara and I have participated in the English classes of multiple different grade levels, recently we have been mainly participating in the 1st and 2nd grade classes. In the first grade classes we usually sing an English song like “Baa Baa Black Sheep,” practice the alphabet, and play a game. While in the second grade classes we focus on practicing the alphabet and playing a game, 

ララと僕は複数の学年の英語の授業に参加していますが、最近は主に小学1年と2年生の授業に参加しています。1年生の授業では、「Baa Baa Black Sheep」のような英語の歌を歌ったり、アルファベットの練習をしたり、ゲームをしたりします。2年生の授業では、アルファベットの練習とゲームを行います。

In both classes, we pass out cards with the letters of the alphabet on them to the students and have students put them in the correct order. The cards have both uppercase and lowercase letters and while the students had trouble with the lowercase letters at first, they have gotten much faster at putting them in order!

授業では、まずアルファベットの1文字が書かれたカードを生徒に配り、正しい順番に並べるゲームをします。1枚のカードには片面に大文字、もう片面に小文字が書かれてあります。最初のころ、生徒たちは小文字に苦労していたものの、今では順番に並べるのがずいぶん早くなりました！

Recently we played Snakes and Ladders with the students. In this game, players roll dice to progress but depending on what space they land on, they may have to go further back or can progress even further. The person who arrives at the finish first wins. The game is entirely luck-based but we enjoyed playing the game while counting the spaces we were moving in English.

最近、生徒たちと「へびとはしご」というゲームをしました。このゲームは、サイコロを振って進んでいくのですが、どのマスに止まるかによって、戻らなければならなかったり、さらに進むことができたりします。このゲームは完全に運任せですが、英語で移動するマスを数えながらゲームを楽しみました。

 
At lunchtime there is also a lunch broadcast that we do a brief English segment in. Generally we talk about and compare American and Japanese holidays depending on the time of year. Occasionally a student will write us a letter with a few questions to read and answer on the broadcast. This time we had two letters to read!

昼休みに、簡単な英語のコーナーを行っています。いつもは、時期に応じてアメリカと日本の祝日について話したり、比較したりします。時々、生徒が手紙を書いてくれて、放送の中で読みます。今回は手紙が2通ありました！

Perhaps the most fun part of our day at Tsukidate Academy is when the students come to the School Community room. This is the room Lara and I’s desks are, along with a few other faculty members. The students will visit this room during their lunch break and between classes. 

月舘学園での一日で一番楽しいときは、生徒たちがスクール・コミュニティに来てくれる時です。そこには、ララと僕の机があり、他の教員もいます。生徒たちは昼休みや授業の合間に訪れます。

Students will do arts and crafts, and give us their masterpieces when they are done. Our desk drawers are full of presents from the students. Some of the students enjoy making origami and the roles were reversed when one of the students was teaching me how to make origami! 

生徒たちは図画工作をし、出来上がったものを僕たちにプレゼントしてくれます。机の引き出しは生徒からのプレゼントでいっぱいです！折り紙作りが趣味の生徒もいて、今回はある生徒が私に折り紙の作り方を教えてくれました！

At the end of the day we see off the students as they leave school. Lara and I give them high fives as they leave and they always look happy to see us (or maybe they’re just happy school is over). The school year is almost over but I’m looking forward to seeing them all again soon!

一日の終わりに、ララと僕は下校する生徒たちとハイタッチをします。生徒たちはいつも笑顔で挨拶してくれるのはとてもうれしいです！今年度もあとわずかですが、またみんなに会えるのを楽しみにしています！
