Sport’s Day at Tsukidate Academy・月舘学園運動会

The Sports Day this year was held on a beautiful, albeit rather hot, Sunday morning. The event was originally scheduled for the previous day but rain had caused a delay. 
今年の運動会は、当初は前日に予定されていましたが、雨のため延期されました。当日はとても暑い日でしたが、前日の雨とは異なり天気の良い美しい日曜日の朝に開催されました。

This was my first time attending a Japanese Sports day and I was excited to see the results of the hard work the students had been putting in leading up to the event.
日本の運動会を見るのは今回が初めてでした。生徒たちが運動会に向けて努力してきた成果を見ることができて、とても嬉しかったです。

The formalities of the opening ceremony are unlike what I had at my Sports Day when I was in school so I was particularly interested in studying the procedures. This included each team having a chant or cheer where they waved their team flag. 
開会式は、私が学生だったころのアメリカの運動会とは違っていて、興味津々でした。

The first of the events were the elementary school solo races. I had heard how fast some of the kids were so I was impressed when I got to see their speed in person. 
最初のイベントは小学生の徒競走でした。子供たちの足の速さは何回も聞いていたので、実際にその姿を見るのが楽しみでした。

Then the tug of war began. At first, only the first-year middle school students participate. 
次は綱引きでした。最初は中学1年生だけの参加でした。

After a certain amount of time, the upperclassmen make a quarter lap race to assist, making for an interesting twist to tug of war. 
少し時間が経ってから、中学2・3年生の先輩たちも参加しみんなで綱引きをしていました。こんな綱引きは初めて見たのでとても面白かったです。

I also was able to watch a sprint event for the kindergartners, who I have an English class with once a month. I was happy to see them outside of the classroom and they were full of energy as always. 
次は、幼稚園児の徒競走でした。普段、英語体験の際に月一回会っていますが、今日は教室の外でいつもと違う形で彼らに会えて嬉しかったです。みんなは相変わらず元気いっぱいでした。

Then came a scavenger hunt style game were students would pull a card at random with instructions on it. Generally these were finding and bringing an item to the finish line, or completing a simple task like delivering a bowl of udon to the principal.
その後、借り物競争が行われました。生徒たちはランダムに指示の書かれたカードを引いて、タスクを完了してゴールします。基本的には、アイテムを見つけてゴールまで持っていくか、簡単なタスクを完了させるというものでした。

One of these tasks was to bring a student dressed as a Pikmin (adorned with Tsukidate’s flower, the Goldband Lily) to the finish line.  
そのひとつが、山百合を頭につけたピクミンをゴールまで連れてくることでした。

To cap off the event was the much awaited relay race. The two teams were further split into two more teams. The four teams had one representative from each grade level. 
イベントの締めくくりは、待ちに待ったリレーでした。紅組と白組がさらに2組に分かれ、紅、黄、青、白の4組で行われました。この4組には、各学年から1名ずつ代表選手が参加しました。

The race ended with the gold team having led the entire time. 
今年のレースは黄組が終始リードしたまま終了しました。

The final point totals were unveiled, signaling a win for the red team. 
最後に最終的な勝点合計が発表され、結果は紅組の勝利でした。

A sixth grade student was designated to receive the victory flag from the principal on behalf of the red team. 
紅組を代表して6年生が校長先生から優勝旗を受け取りました。

I may not have another chance to attend a school sports day so I was so happy to be able to attend the Tsukidate Academy sports day and will continue to cherish it as a precious memory.
これからは学校の運動会を観覧する機会はあまりないかもしれないので、月舘学園の運動会を観覧できたことは本当に嬉しかったです。これからもずっと大切な思い出になります。
