Receiving My Diamond Health Card ・ ふくしま健民ダイヤモンドカード受章

It has taken two years, but my dream has finally come true!
2年の年月を経て、ついに夢がかないました!

Ever since the program began two years ago, I have been working hard daily to accrue Healthy and Happy Date Points.
一昨年の事業開始時からずっと参加していた僕は毎日、だてな健幸ポイントを溜めるように頑張っています。

These points allows city residents to obtain Fukushima Kenmin Cards of varying ranks.
このポイントで、市民は色んな段階のふくしま健民カードを手に入れることができます。

My goal has been to achieve the highest-level Fukushima Kenmin Card while still serving as a Date City CIR.
僕の目標は伊達市の国際交流員として働いている間に最高級の健民カードを取得することでした。

I was able to attain a Gold (and then, Platinum) Card last August, but there were still tens of thousands of points between me and the Diamond Card.
去年の8月にゴールド(そしてプラチナ)のカードの入手ができましたが、ダイヤモンドのカードまではあと数万ポイントが必要でした。

At times, I considered becoming lax in my healthy habits and negligent in my record keeping; but somehow I was able to brush such thoughts aside, and continue the struggle to accumulate points.
時には、健康的な習慣やポイントの記録を怠ってもいいかなと考えてしまいましたが、どうにかそんな思考ははねのけて、ポイント蓄積の奮闘を続けました。

I had filled out a sizeable pile of worksheets before I was confident that I had enough points to submit.
提出のためのポイントが貯まった時には、記入台紙が山積もりでした。

Checking all of them proved to be a substantial task, when at last I visited the Hobara Health Center.
ようやく保原保健センターに訪問したら、記入台紙の確認が大変な仕事になりました。

My gratitude to the Health Center’s kind staff is – like the validity period of my new Diamond Card – without end!
保健センターの優しい職員への感謝は、ダイヤモンドカードの有効期間と同じく、切りがありません!

Having obtained a new card, I also became eligible to receive a gift from Date City.
新しいカードを頂くと、伊達市からの贈り物も頂けるようになりました。

A number of gift cards were offered, each worth 500 yen.
いくつかの500円分の商品券から選べました。

“Strong Minds, Healthy Bodies” was the motto of my middle-school PE teacher; his words prompted me to request a Tosho Card, redeemable at bookstores nationwide.
「知力、健康体」とは中学校時代の体育の先生の座右の銘でしたので、全国のほとんどの書店で使える図書カードを選びました。

I will also receive a gift from Fukushima Prefecture, given that I win a raffle.
福島県からも贈り物を頂きますが、抽選で当たる必要があります。

The prize available for Diamond Card recipients is none less than an electric juicer.
ダイヤモンドカード受賞者はなんと、ジューサーが貰えるかもしれません。

Yet the joy of winning a juicer would only be icing on the grand cake of satisfaction I have attained by receiving the final Fukushima Kenmin Card.
しかし、ジューサーが当たっても、その喜びは最高級のふくしま健民カードを受賞したことの満足感と比較になりません。

Some readers may be wondering, “What is there to do after obtaining the Diamond Card?”
愛読者の中には、「ダイヤモンドカードを貰ったら、もうすることが無いんじゃないか」と思っている方がいるでしょう。

Certainly, it is the highest level card, and there is no expiration date.
たしかに、最高ランクの健民カードであり、有効期限は無いのです。

With no tangible reward for pursing health and fitness, your correspondent may very well relapse to the depths of an unhealthy lifestyle.
健康づくりに具体的なご褒美がなければ、恐らく僕は不健康な生活の淵に後戻りをするかもしれません。

Enter the Master Seal.
ここで、マスターシールを紹介します。

Ten round spaces are arranged on the back of the Diamond Card. 
ダイヤモンドカードの裏に、10個の白い丸が並んでいます。

They are waiting for the cardholder to accumulate an additional ten thousand health points, allowing one of them to be gloriously covered by a stamp or sticker, known as a “Master Seal”.
ダイヤモンドカードの持ち主が、追加で1万ポイント貯めるごとに「マスターシール」というシールかスタンプを押してもらえます。

As a reward for receiving a Master Seal, I could receive another postcard to enter a Prefectural raffle.
マスターシール受章のご褒美として、福島県の抽選の申し込み用紙になるはがきをもう一枚もらえました。

Yet, which would I choose?
しかし、どちらの抽選に応募すればいいでしょうか?

Arriving at a decision involved riding a long and shaky train of thought.
決断にはたくさんの時間を要しました。

Suddenly, that train screeched to a halt.
そして僕は決断しました。

I decided to place all my bets on the juicer.
すべてをジューサーに賭けると決めました。

However, I returned from the Hobara Health Center with more than just a handful of cards; I also carried back a thick slab of empty worksheets.
ところが、保原保健センターから持って帰ったのは健民カードとはがきだけではありませんでした。新しい記入台紙もたくさん持って帰りました。

Since it is possible to earn additional Master Seals for every ten thousand health points gained, I was asked to continue tenaciously striving after health, and recording my progress on those paper forms.
一万ポイントを貯めるたびに一枚のマスターシールを更にもらえますので、健康づくりの道をまだまだ歩んで、台紙で記入するようにとのことでした。

Without the slightest flinch of hesitation, I took up the challenge.
ひるむことなく、その挑戦を受け入れました。

Participating in the Healthy and Happy Date Point Program has been my favorite part of living in Date City, and I hope to earn a few more Master Seals while I’m here.
だてな健幸ポイント事業に参加することが伊達市での在留の一番好きな事になってしまっていて、市内に住む間にまだまだマスターシールを受章したいと思います。

The Kannon of Rishō Temple ・ 利生寺観音

Having visited the Kannon of Taira Temple, I left the Fushiguro neighborhood for the downstream (former) town of Yanagawa.
平寺観音に参った後で、伏黒地区を去って、下流の旧梁川町に向かいました。

There, beside a bank of the Hirose River, I was intent on finding the Kannon of Rishō Temple.
利生寺観音は広瀬川のすぐ隣にあります。

As much as I wanted to take a boat there, I didn’t have one available; and eventually resorted to driving a car through the narrow streets of Yanagawa’s Furomachi neighborhood.
本当はボートで阿武隈川を下りたい気分でしたが、それは出来なかったので仕方なく車で向かいました。

I was guided by the cleric of nearby Shōmyō Temple, along with a local resident who keeps the key.
近くにある称名寺のお坊様と鍵を預かる近所の方に案内して頂きました。

When the doors of the Kannon hall were finally opened, I was amazed by the array before me.
観音堂の扉が開くと、目の前の光景に驚きました。

Within this spectacular collection are two of Date City’s Designated Cultural Properties.
この宝尽くしの中に、伊達市指定文化財が二件あります。

One can be found in the very center of the wooden building.
一件は観音堂の内部にあります。

Here stand two hexagonal cases; the innermost is the registered item, renowned for its intricate woodwork.
ここには六角形の入れ物が二つあり、内側のものは緻密な木工細工が認められている指定文化財です。

Inside stands the main figure of veneration.
そしてその中に御本尊がございます。

At other temples we’ve visited, the main venerated image has been in the back, with some hidden and only rarely shown.
今まで訪問した観音堂では、御本尊が堂の奥にあり、場合によっては隠れていて、たまにしか開帳されていません。

It isn’t hidden here – but neither is it a designated cultural property.
ここの御本尊は隠されていませんが、指定文化財でもありません。

That honor goes to the man in the back.
その名誉は奥の方のものです。

Whereas the main image was made compleTely visible, the 115 cm statue behind it was partially hidden due to the disparity between its size and the size of its cabinet.
一方御本尊は全貌が見られましたが、その裏にある115センチの仏像は厨子との大きさの違いの影響であまり見えませんでした。

Nonetheless, I was able to get a good shot in.
それにもかかわらず、良い写真が一枚とられたと思います。

However, these aren’t the only two Buddhist statues here.
しかし、仏像はこれ以外にもあります。

Lining the rear wall are thirty-three Buddhist statues, one for each of the Shintatsu 33 sites.
裏の壁には信達三十三観音を代表する33体の仏像があります。

Readers will remember a similar, albeit outdoor assembly at the Kannon of Seisui Temple.
愛読者は清水寺観音にも同じような集まりが(屋外に)あったのを覚えておりますでしょうか。

In May, I wasn’t able to see the object of veneration inside the Kannon Hall (which is just as well, as the original was taken by burglars post-war); so I was happy to be shown its smaller rendition here.
5月に、清水寺観音の御本尊が見えませんでしたが、本来の御本尊は戦後に盗まれたので、ここで同じ姿の仏像が見られて嬉しかったです。

Yet this Kannon hall is filled with more than just statues; there are also many paintings.
この観音堂には仏像だけではなく、絵画もたくさんあります。

Even the wooden carvings have been painted.
木製の彫刻物も彩られていました。

I was impressed to see how they’ve maintained their color throughout the years.
長年にわたり色を保っている事が素晴らしいと思います。

I was also impressed by the black and red ink that was kindly applied to my book of signed seals.
頂いた赤色と黒色の御朱印も素晴らしいと思います。

Make sure to get your seal as well, next time you make a round of the Kannon halls in Yanagawa.
梁川地域の観音堂を参る際、是非この素敵な御朱印をもらって下さい。

Over the next two months, we will be covering other Kannon halls in this former town.
これからの二ヶ月、旧梁川町の観音堂の取材をします。
